Goals
    ï‚— Modes of collaboration
    ï‚— Understanding movement
ï‚— Establish learning of the task
ï‚— Influence design of future systems
ï‚— Test networked haptics and model of collaboration for
         future work

Experiment 1 - Haptic
                            Collaboration
    ï‚— 300+ participant over 3 days

                                                                  7
Experiment 2 – Home-Based
             Rehabilitation
    ï‚— 4 stroke survivors

ï‚— 12-weeks of haptic assessment and exercise tasks

ï‚— Participants have suffered some level of upper-limb impairment
as a result of their stroke.

ï‚— Participants >6 months post stroke, with no further strokes
         within the last 6 months.

ï‚— Participants were not receiving any other therapy for hand and
         wrist function.

Why home-based?
ï‚— Can be more effective at home
    ï‚— Can reduce costs
ï‚— In the comfort of own home
ï‚— Likely to exercise more frequently and with greater
         variability

Shape Preferences
ï‚— Four shapes: Box, Star-shaped block, Cylinder, and a
         Sphere.

ï‚— Two categories: curved sided, and flat sided.

Limitations
ï‚— There was no continued/follow up which may may have
shown further increases in task performance and a
demonstration of learned skill for the task for the
         healthy group.

ï‚— Interaction pairs in the stroke group consisted of the
participant and the investigator providing an interaction
         bias.

Conclusions
ï‚— Different shapes afford different movements/interaction
  paradigms

ï‚— Curved surfaced shapes can be used for fine motor
  skill practice

ï‚— Flat sided shapes can be used for strength/stamina
  building exercises

Editor's Notes

  • #8: Setup, explanation of the simplicity of the task that people who couldn’t understand English were able to complete the task without communication between the two parties.
  • #10: Clarifying the use of the device and the home-based scenario
  • #17: Also mention left-to-right preference and EU connection...
