COMUNITY TROUGH PHILANTOPIC SOCIAL ACTION
By Dani Buyo, Colorado State University , Ski Area Managemet program participant. Oct. 2016
“La Compagnie du Mont Blanc” , trough their foundation, keep close the
relationships with the valley community. Chamonix in “Haute Savoie” French Alps is
one of the symbols the origins of mountaineering on Europe, as son as situated
down to the Mont Blanc Mountain. The company in charge to operate the ski areas
and lifts in the entire valley; and employ around 40% of families in their different
departments. Source: Communauté de Communes de la Vallée de Chamonix Mont-
Blanc and Compagnie du Mont-Blanc corporative website.
Mt Bachelor Ski Area in Oregon, shows us the special relationship with Bend, the
nearest town of the ski base, a community very involved on the town social life and
pure nature lovers. And supporting the program “Let the Kids Ski” fo Bend
Endurance Association, with an strong weigth on the town community. Source

"Mt. Bachelor Sports Education Foundation (MBSEF) will continue to offer the same
high-quality youth, young adult, collegiate and masters Nordic programs they have
offered at Mt. Bachelor Nordic Center since it opened in 1984 under its "authorized
user" status granted by Mt. Bachelor and on record with the Deschutes National
Forest. KTWZ.COM, (2015)
Grandvalira Andorra case, trough Grandvalira Social designate an amount of 85
thousand dollars for season to philanthropic activities with local community. These
range of actions go from economical helps to needed families, to cover the
expenses of material for national scholarship ski program or covering medical
expenses of employees family on huge surgery aids or direct economical fee to the
eight ONG associations in the country. Source Grandvalira Social Foundation intership
information. Source Grandvalira Social foundation memorandum.
After examinee their action and relationships with the employees group, we found
several common points on the Grandvalira and “Compagnie du Mont Blanc how they
establish the social projects that support, and how designate the resources in order
to arrive as wider as possible involving the community.
The ski for school program named on Mt Bachelor or scholarship ski program named
in Grandvalira Andorre have common points on the concept , and match on the
main goal: Encourage and help the kids as the future clients or they can be part
of the future employees group. As soon as is usual specially in Andorre that
employee kids join in first employment experiences, becoming part of new “ski
bums” on early ages.
In Chamonix the importance of ski on the scholarships are higher, because a very
high % of population are mountaineers or skiers then ski, trekking or mountain
biking reach all the population. Anyway the foundation support the activities
promoted by youth associations on the valley.
The main difference come from the funds precedence, while Mt bachelor base the
main part of Budget on the Charity ski week, Chamonix and Andorra have a direct
amount on the general Budget. But they are managing quantities between fifty and
seventy thousand dollars on these community relationship programs. At the end the
less important are the way to obtain the funds, the really important are how to
manage its to establish a good relationship with community.
Concretely of Grandvalira Social Fund, attach down the memorandum document of
community action last season, public information that personally I complete on the
document attached.
