- 1. Relationships When we think about our relationships to people we often use closeness and distance to describe our connection to other people. Mate is a word for a good friend, but it can also be used in compound words to describe a person you share something with - хороший друг, используется и в составных словах: classmate школьный друг, shipmate корабельный товарищ, workmate друг по работе, roommate / flatmate товарищ по комнате The stress is always on the first word in each case. Ударение всегда на первый слог. Fiancé/fiancee is still used to speak of someone you are engaged to, or have plans to marry, although many English speakers no longer use this word as it has become rather dated. Жених/невеста – почти не используются в современной разговорной речи English has no universal word for 'someone you live with but are not married to' but partner is probably the most common. Partner is also commonly used in gay/lesbian couples.

- 4. She's my junior/ I'm her senior (refers to age, or to length of time spent at a job/ position at work) I'm senior to her, so she does what I tell her.
