La rendita è una successione di somme esigibili in epoche diverse, con ogni rata definita da importo e scadenza. Essa può derivare da contratti di affitto, vendita a rate o prestiti, risultando attiva per il creditore e passiva per il debitore. Inoltre, le successioni di stipendi rappresentano anch'esse rendite, contrattualmente stabilite tra lavoratore e datore di lavoro.

Spesso la rendita ha origine

 La rendita risulta così attiva per il creditore e
passiva per il debitore.

Per esempio

il signor Rossi da in affitto al signor Bianchi un
terreno, o un appartamento, e il signor Bianchi
pagherà periodicamente (per esempio
mensilmente o trimestralmente) un canone di
affitto; le rate di affitto costituiscono una rendita;
 il signor Rossi vende al signor Bianchi un bene,
per esempio un immobile, e il signor Bianchi si
obbliga a pagare, anziché un prezzo immediato,
una successione di rate;
 il signor Rossi presta al signor Bianchi una
somma e il signor Bianchi si impegna a pagare
periodicamente delle rate per estinguere il debito.


Più raro è il caso di rendita a titolo gratuito: per
esempio una persona si obbliga a corrispondere a un
parente una somma fissa periodica, senza aver
avuto nessun corrispettivo.
 Costituisce una rendita, per la matematica
finanziaria, anche la successione degli stipendi o
salari che riceve un lavoratore:


◦ anche qui la rendita nasce da un contratto tra lavoratore e
datore di lavoro.
