Dengue fever is an infectious tropical disease caused by the dengue virus and transmitted by mosquitoes. Symptoms include fever, headaches, joint and muscle pain, and rash. While most people recover within a week, some cases can worsen, damaging blood vessels and causing bleeding, abdominal pain, vomiting and organ problems. A small proportion of cases can develop into life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome.
