Simone Graham's EPQ project examines how the Disney Corporation has achieved success and how their film production techniques and types of films contribute to this success. Through secondary research of sources like books, websites and surveys, as well as primary research including analyzing movie trailers and surveying family and friends, Simone found that while Disney focuses on profits and technology, the general public cares more about story, characters and quality. Simone also learned about Disney's history and the production processes involved in creating their animated films. Overall, the project helped improve Simone's research and analysis skills.
My EPQ project was to create illustrations based on the wants and needs of my target audience of primary school children aged 7-9. Through research and experimenting with different artistic techniques like watercolors, acrylic paint, pen, collage, and pop-ups, I determined that acrylic paint worked best to produce illustrations with high detail and tonal value that would appeal to my audience. I conducted a workshop where the children enjoyed illustrations with humanized animals, strong texture and detail, and realistic colors. My final product was acrylic paintings that met the wants of my target audience. I learned skills in referencing, time management, and working with different artistic styles and techniques through completing this project.
This is the main bulk of my EPQ which gained an A grade at A Level. There are other bits, such as a log, reflection and several appendices, but this is the main bulk of it

The presentation provides the framework to discuss all aspects of an EPQ from topic outline to research to evaluation.
1) Most people found advertising for films and TV to be effective but also annoying at times.
2) Without advertising, people would have no way of knowing about upcoming films and TV shows.
3) Film and media industries likely would not be as popular or successful without advertising to promote their products.
4) Companies spend billions on advertising each year to promote their brands and products in order to drive sales and awareness.

This document discusses various methods for conducting research, including focus groups, interviews, questionnaires, and qualitative and quantitative research. It provides details on the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Focus groups and interviews can provide in-depth information but may not represent majority opinions. Questionnaires can reflect broader opinions but lack depth. Qualitative research explores why and how through open questions, while quantitative research uses statistics and closed questions. The document also discusses closed vs open questions and sources of information.
The student produced a digipak for their print based media project. They liked that they met the brief requirements and incorporated audience feedback without sacrificing their initial ideas. However, they disliked that all the elements looked too similar due to a lack of creativity in conveying each piece differently. They also felt information about the band and tracks was lacking. If they did the project again, they would include more essential details, vary the designs used rather than relying on one effect, and do more research into interesting digipak designs.
The document discusses revisions made to a CD cover design based on feedback. The original design featured a lion decal in a gray, black, and white style. Most people who provided feedback liked the lion but suggested improvements. Specifically, they thought adding elements of fire to represent the lion would make it more interesting. The designer then updated the background using effects in Photoshop to add a red and yellow gradient and sunburst pattern representing fire. Additional film grain and text changes were made to complete the updated design incorporating the suggestion to include fire elements.
The document summarizes a marketing pitch for a new James Bond film called "James Bond: Night Fire." It presents research supporting the choice of the Grange Whitehall Hotel in London as the location for press junkets. Statistics show London has a large population, including many in the target age range of 13-30. The hotel's central London location is also well situated near theaters, restaurants, and nightclubs. The pitch discusses trailer placement, poster locations, a potential viral marketing campaign, and merchandising options, providing evidence each method would be effective given the target audience and genre. Charts and illustrations are used to present the pitch professionally using correct terminology.

The document provides a research log of sources used to research the target audience of James Bond films. The sources include Yahoo Answers threads, Empire Magazine from June 2010, Sight and Sound magazine, and books on James Bond film design, cult films, and the history of Euston Films. The research log notes the author, date, detailed findings, page numbers if from a book, and web addresses if from online sources. It aims to understand who the films appeal to most in terms of age, gender, and interests.
The document discusses print finishing considerations for a digipak music packaging. It recommends designing the digipak to be strong yet lightweight, with an opening mechanism that allows the CD disc to be easily placed in and played or stored securely. The digipak should stand upright and display attractively when slightly opened, showing the front cover design while giving a glimpse inside but without revealing all details or additional included items like a booklet. The packaging aims to create anticipation for consumers about printing quality and contents while still surprising them. Distribution targets major retailers and online stores like iTunes, with a suggested summer launch window.
This document discusses paper and ink types for print-based media. It describes gloss paper as being suitable for printing due to its ability to allow ink to dry quickly. It also mentions coated, matte, and silk finish papers. The document discusses dye-based inks which produce brighter colors but take longer to dry, and pigment-based inks which dry more quickly but offer less bright color options. Sources on printing paper and ink types are provided.
There are several key considerations when producing a CD/digipak for print-based media:
1) Cost is an important factor, as printing costs can be expensive, but producing a single digipak will keep costs minimal.
2) Available resources must be evaluated, including software skills, paper, and craft materials needed for design.
3) Quantity is limited since this is a single digipak for a class project, but the target audience and market still needs to be considered which is teenagers aged 13-17 of both genders.
Print-based media includes products like albums, posters, and magazines. Students will learn to develop ideas and designs for print products. They will explore originating designs for album covers to showcase music and inspire listeners.
This document outlines learning objectives for developing ideas and originating designs for print-based products. It discusses design origination, typography, and inspired imagery. Two draft design ideas are presented for consideration.
This document lists potential ideas and themes that could be used to originate designs for print-based products, including animals, dinosaurs, medieval times, space, nature, the future, myths, legends, and more abstract concepts like redemption, insanity and corruption. A wide range of topics are presented without details to spark creativity for print design projects.
This document summarizes the results of a questionnaire about target audiences for CD packaging. The questionnaire asked about preferred social groups, genders, music genres, and political views. Most respondents felt the target should be teenagers of both genders. The preferred music genres were also very varied, with an equal number of votes for pop, indie, electronic, metal, and punk. In general, the results across all categories seemed fairly even.
This document discusses the advantages and disadvantages of print-based media techniques and technologies used for CD covers and digipaks. Some key advantages are that designers have creative freedom with the square album art format and all music producers have equal opportunities. A disadvantage is that some images may need to be simplified or cropped to fit the size constraints. Skills in photography, image editing, graphic design, and mathematics are generally required for producing print-based media packaging.
This document discusses print-based media techniques and technologies used in the music industry. It explains that some music companies want to separate themselves and their artists by using unique CD cover designs. The techniques and technologies used may depend on the genre of music and whether the company wants to appear modern or traditional. When designing for a specific artist, it is important to consider their style and preferences, as well as meeting the goals of the client or brief. Digital design programs like Photoshop can be used to create covers that stand out from others.
Early CD covers had to be produced with hand drawings and basic techniques because printing technologies like InkJet and LaserJet that are commonly used today were not invented until the 1970s. Now, advanced computers and design programs allow even small bands to create professional-looking CD covers and packaging. The main differences between older and modern print-based media production lie in the technologies and resources available over time.
This document discusses print-based media techniques and technology used for CD covers. It explains that print-based companies use a variety of design styles like painting, photography, or digital art depending on the artist's specifications. It also outlines the different types of CD covers, with basic covers minimizing costs for new artists and fancy covers including extras like additional packaging. Finally, it notes that print-based technology is always evolving and digipaks have become more common, though expensive to produce.
This chapter discusses primary and secondary research methods. Primary research methods outlined include interviews, observations, questionnaires, surveys, focus groups, and participation in online forums. Secondary research methods include books, journals, reference materials, periodicals, newspapers, archives, libraries, the internet, and government statistics. The chapter also provides a table comparing primary and secondary research, noting primary research involves original data collection while secondary research uses existing sources.
