Resources are classified based on their development level, origin, quantity, and distribution. Actual resources are those whose quantity is known and are currently being used, while potential resources' full quantity may be unknown and are not currently being used but could be in the future. Resources are also classified as biotic, consisting of non-living things like rocks, or abiotic, consisting of living things like plants and animals.
