The document discusses the use of hyperbole in Sherman Alexie's young adult novel The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. It provides an example where the main character Junior says that everyone on the reservation called him "retard" twice a day, which is an exaggeration used for comedic effect. The author argues that Alexie employs hyperbole and other writing devices to make the reader like and relate to the main character, despite portraying him as a "loser".

Hyperbole # 1
The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is a young adult
novel written by Sherman Alexie. In the first chapter, The Black Eye-of-
the-Month-Club, Alexie writes many examples of hyperbole. Hyperbole is
an exaggeration of events to evoke a strong feeling or emotion. One
example of hyperbole is when Alexie writes, Everyone on the rez called
me retard about twice a day (4). This is an obvious exaggeration because
it is unlikely that Junior even saw everyone on the rez each day, and if he
did, youd think calling him retard once would be enough. It seems Alexies
use of hyperbole in this instance is to make the reader laugh, or at least
smile. Alexie writes Junior to be one of the biggest losers imaginable,
however, he uses many writing devices to make the reader like the main
character.
