  1. What makes a good job interview? The DePaul Career Center offers free workshops for students and alumni that can help you be confident going into an interview and increase your chances for success.
  2. First, it’s important to practice the interview process before you go on an actual interview. DePaul students can practice interviewing in two ways: by using the online service Interview Stream at any time night or day, or by scheduling a practice interview with a live person via the Alumni Sharing Knowledge program.
  3. You should also make sure to attend the workshops at the Career Center. During the workshops about interviewing offered to DePaul students and alumni, you can get tips on how to prepare, learn about the different types of interviewing questions asked, and more.
  4. For example, before you begin, review your resume so that you are able to talk in detail about your skills and accomplishments. Come up with a list of your strengths and skills you can offer to an employer so that you share them with an interviewer. Be prepared to provide 1 or 2 examples of these skills from your academic, work, volunteer, or internship experiences.
  5. Also, be sure to research the organization you will be interviewing with prior to the interview. Research the organization’s history, core business, size, culture, achievements and competitors.
  6. And make sure to prepare in advance by creating a list of questions you would like to ask about the organization, position or interviewer.Some examples might be:What are the top three priorities for someone in this position?What has your career path been with this organization?What characteristics and skills are you looking for in a top performer?
  7. It’s also important not to bring up salary or benefits during the interview, to make sure to be on time, and to dress professionally so that you make a positive and professional first impression.
  8. Following up after your interview is an important step in the process. If you are not sure what next steps are, ask the interviewer. Send a thank you note 1-2 business days after your interview to show initiative and reiterate your interest in the position. Think about the questions you answered well and those you would answer differently in the future. Make notes to yourself to remember.
