Rheumatic fever is an inflammatory disease that can affect the heart, joints, central nervous system, skin, and tissues, typically occurring after an untreated streptococcal infection like strep throat or scarlet fever. It is diagnosed when a patient meets two major criteria or one major and two minor criteria as outlined by the revised Jones criteria, along with evidence of a prior streptococcal infection. Treatment involves preventing further streptococcal infections, anti-inflammatory medications, antibiotics, and bed rest during acute phases of the disease.
2. RHEUMATIC FEVER
It is an immunological disorder initiated by group A beta hemolytic
streptococcus.
A disease that can result from inadequately treated strep throat or scarlet
fever.
This is a systemic inflammatory disease of childhood that can involve the
heart, joints, CNs, skin and tissues.
4. DIAGNOSTIC EVALUATION
According to revised jones criteria:
The diagnosis is made when
2 of major criteria or 1 major criteria
+
2 minor criteria
are present along with the evidence of streptococcal infection ( elevated
ASLO titre).
8. MANAGEMENT
Beta streptococcal infection can prevent.
Anti inflammatory medication like aspirin
Antibiotic.
Bed rest is recommended during the acute phase of disease.
