Rizal repeatedly asked the Governor General for permission to leave for Cuba but was denied. In July 1896, he left Dapitan and arrived in Manila in August, where he was detained. Despite letters of introduction, he was sent to Fort Santiago instead of allowed to depart for Spain. In November 1896, while the Philippine Revolution against Spain had begun, Rizal was tried and executed by firing squad in Manila for his writings and alleged ties to the revolution.

persuade Rizal to step ashore and saved his
