Hazard Update – Very Severe Cyclonic Storm ‘VARDAH’
This information bulletin focuses on the cyclone impact on districts and pincodes due to the peak wind and surge
heights as estimated by RMSI using cyclone hazard modeling techniques to help the insurance and reinsurance
industry in assessing their exposure from the event.
Estimated Wind Profile of Cyclone VARDAH
RMSI applied its cyclone model for the computation of cyclonic wind fields (kmph) induced by very severe
cyclonic storm ‘VARDAH’ and analyzed the extent of maximum winds and associated surge height which
could have devastating effects on coastal areas. The RMSI cyclone model employs a dynamic storm
module that is used to determine the spatial distribution of cyclonic wind field. Using data relating to storm
size, intensity, and position of the cyclone at fixed interval of times, the model captures wind field footprints
at each location, every 3 min over the entire duration of the storm.
RMSI experts analyzed the wind distribution and associated magnitude for cyclone VARDAH based on the
IMD bulletin issued on Mon Dec 12 14:45:00 2016

Impact Summary
 Landfall location for VARDAH: 80.3° E, 13.2° N (Near Chennai)
 Maximum surge height 1.23 m above the astronomical tides (Along Nellore district)
 Maximum wind speed 109.62 kmph
 District: Thiruvallur at Pincode 601204
 State: Tamil Nadu
Affected Areas
The model simulated estimated maximum wind speeds of about 100-110 kmph along and off Chennai,
Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu and adjoining Chittoor and Nellore district of Andhra
Pradesh. The maximum storm surge amplitude of about 1.23 m is estimated along coastal region of Nellore
district. The peak surge value at Thiruvallur is around 0.82 m. Also, it is seen that a coastal stretch of about
50 km to the north of the landfall point is affected with a surge of more than 1 m.
