Robert De LaSalle was born in 1643 in France to a wealthy family and was educated to become a Jesuit priest. He left the priesthood in 1666 and went to Canada where he gained authority over the area of Lachine. He later explored the Great Lakes region and Ohio River Valley, and in 1682 was the first European to travel the entire length of the Mississippi River, claiming the territory for France. Unfortunately, on one of his later expeditions his men mutinied and killed him in 1687 near present-day Texas.
