HISTORY OF PHYSIOTHERAPY
• Dates back in 460bc when first manual therapy started
• In 1887 it was officially registered by Sweden's national
board of health & welfare.
• 1st research was published in US in 1921.
• In the early 1950's British commonwealth countries started
treating extremity joints.
• Mary Mc Millan also known as mother of physical therapy
revolutionized this area by establishing APTA.

TYPES OF PHYSIOTHERAPY
1. GERIATRIC PHYSICAL THERAPY : For older adults,
aim is to treat age related disorders.
2. SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY : for faster recovery
from injuries and boost your sports performance.
3. ORTHOPEDIC PHYSIOTHERAPY : Musculoskeletal
disorder that affects your flexibility.
4. PEDIATRIC PHYSICAL THERAPY : prevent and treat
disorder that effects teens.

• Book Sushruta samhita written in 600 BC had accounts of PTH.
being used in ancient times.
• In modern India it first started in 1952 with the outbreak of
polio in Mumbai.
• In 1953 India’s first centre and school started in Mumbai itself.
• IAP was setup in 1962.

HOT AND COLD THERAPY EQUIPMENTS- To relieve pain from
inflammation.
Thermotherapy involve use of hot water.
It promotes blood flow and helps muscles relax.
Cryotherapy involves cold water treatment.
Reduces inflammation by decreasing blood flow.
RICE method is used for physical training injuries.
