The Philippines and South Korea established diplomatic relations in 1949, and the Philippines supported South Korea during the Korean War by deploying troops and later providing economic, educational, and agricultural aid in the aftermath. The two countries have maintained strong bilateral relations since, establishing embassies in each other's capitals in the 1950s and cooperating economically and politically, with South Korea becoming an important trade partner and source of investment for the Philippines.
