Dr. Ryan: Hello Amanda. Good to see you.
Last week we examined American political parties and how interest groups affect their behavior.
This week were going to cover political participation, focusing on the campaign process and the elections they lead to.
Before we get started, what are your thoughts about these concepts, Amanda?
Amanda: I think its important that only in a democratic society would you see campaigns free of violence and elections based on the principle of a one man-one vote system.
Thats not to say that we didnt arrive at this stage without violence, because there are plenty of examples in our history. But were there now.
Dr. Ryan: Alright then, can you provide some examples?
Amanda: Easily. Women didnt have the right to vote until 1920 and they had to agitate heavily for that against some pretty strong opposition. And blacks were discriminated against at polls throughout the South until the Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965.
Campaigns and elections are now very civilized affairs. But until the early twentieth century, voter fraud and the intimidation of black voters were common at polling stations, mostly in the South. And telling out lies about ones opponent was commonplace in campaigns at every level.
Dr. Ryan: So what do you think changed?
Amanda: I think we became a more sophisticated democracy in the twentieth century. That, and libel laws were more strictly enforced by the courts.
Dr. Ryan: Excellent observations.
In fact, voters were tired of the free-for-alls that marked the political process up to that point. They demanded more accountability from their elected officials. This made them start promising less and delivering more on the promises they did make.
Even now, candidates dont always fulfill these promises. But at least the voter has made them become more realistic.
Amanda: This is why it is so ironic that, as politics has cleaned itself up, voter participation has dropped.
Dr. Ryan: Indeed it has. During elections in the nineteenth century and up through the middle of the twentieth century, it was not uncommon to see voter turnouts of seventy to eighty percent. But now that figure has fallen below seventy percent and in some presidential elections, were lucky if half of all eligible voters make an appearance.

Dr. Ryan: Hello Amanda. Good to see you.
Last week we examined American political parties and how interest groups affect their behavior.
This week were going to cover political participation, focusing on the campaign process and the elections they lead to.
Before we get started, what are your thoughts about these concepts, Amanda?
Amanda: I think its important that only in a democratic society would you see campaigns free of violence and elections based on the principle of a one man-one vote system.
Thats not to say that we didnt arrive at this stage without violence, because there are plenty of examples in our history. But were there now.
Dr. Ryan: Alright then, can you provide some examples?
Amanda: Easily. Women didnt have the right to vote until 1920 and they had to agitate heavily for that against some pretty strong opposition. And blacks were discriminated against at polls throughout the South until the Voting Rights Act was passed in 1965.
Campaigns and elections are now very civilized affairs. But until the early twentieth century, voter fraud and the intimidation of black voters were common at polling stations, mostly in the South. And telling out lies about ones opponent was commonplace in campaigns at every level.
Dr. Ryan: So what do you think changed?
Amanda: I think we became a more sophisticated democracy in the twentieth century. That, and libel laws were more strictly enforced by the courts.
Dr. Ryan: Excellent observations.
In fact, voters were tired of the free-for-alls that marked the political process up to that point. They demanded more accountability from their elected officials. This made them start promising less and delivering more on the promises they did make.
Even now, candidates dont always fulfill these promises. But at least the voter has made them become more realistic.
Amanda: This is why it is so ironic that, as politics has cleaned itself up, voter participation has dropped.
Dr. Ryan: Indeed it has. During elections in the nineteenth century and up through the middle of the twentieth century, it was not uncommon to see voter turnouts of seventy to eighty percent. But now that figure has fallen below seventy percent and in some presidential elections, were lucky if half of all eligible voters make an appearance.

On Election Day of 2014, Republicans won a big victory. And it really was a Wave victory, bigger than 2010 in a lot of important ways despite the fact that you'd never know it listening to the mainstream media.
Just because it was more or less expected doesn't make it less of a major thrashing than 2010 was.
One of the reasons it was so big and so important is that the GOP didn't win the same way everywhere. In 2010 the pattern was pretty consistent across the country.
In 2014 Republicans again won big, but it's a little more complicated how. And that's important as we look toward 2016 and beyond.
Obama thinks the election wasn't about him. Some political scientists are already trying to make hand-waving arguments that Republicans didn't win groups that exit polls show they won.
So, what should Republicans take from the 2014 Election? Here are five important lessons:
1) Obama's policies were on the ballot, as he said. But to dismiss 2014 as only about Obama is both to diminish the massive size of the Republican victory and to miss the important lessons of the election. This was a complete rejection of Democrats and liberal policies.
2) The return of working class whites (aka, Reagan Democrats, Angry White Males, Tea Party Voters) to the polls proves that 2010 was not a fluke and teaches Republicans an important lesson for 2016:
The GOP must have a nominee, and candidates up and down the ballot, who can connect with this populist voting block.
3) Despite their vaunted turnout technology, Democrats didn't fully get the Obama coalition to the polls. This raises real questions about the replicability of African American turnout without Obama at the top of the ticket.
Where Democrats did get other parts of their coalition out, the messaging required likely cost them more votes elsewhere than it earned them in turnout (e.g., Udall in Colorado).
4) The GOP has messages and candidates who can win in a diverse array of states. The message of a David Perdue in Georgia, a Greg Abbott in Texas, and a Larry Hogan in Maryland shared some basic similarities. But they were also each somewhat unique to the candidate and situation.
5) Outside of African Americans (persuading whom is going to be the work of many campaigns) 2014 proved that Republicans can win Asians nationally and can come very close to splitting Hispanics in a race with the right message and campaign.
The myth of Republicans as the white party is just that: a myth. Toward that point, the GOP must continue a robust campaign toward all demographic groups.legacy-report

For instance, newspapers are not the most widespread medium anymore, but they are still useful for grassroots political campaigns or for older, more affluent voters.
Once the best mediums are found, the next focus is on wording the campaign communication properly. When talking to voters, any communication should be personal and highlight why a particular campaign is beneficial for a particular community. Hypothetically, if a voter base loves the environment, political communications should mention the environment.
At the same time, all communication should be formatted as a conversation. Make sure it uses personal pronouns and is positive and polite, as if someone is addressing voters in person and not through an advertisement or other form of contact.
