This document from BMW provides information on setting a RPM limit for new S1000 RR motorcycles during their running-in period. It specifies that between February 16, 2010 and later dates, motorcycles were programmed from the factory with a 9,000 RPM limit for 500-1200 km to protect engine components. For motorcycles produced before these dates, the limit must be set manually as part of the pre-delivery check using the specified work item. The limit can be deleted after the running-in period as part of regular maintenance.

Limit for running-in rpm
S 1000 RR (K46, 0507/0517)
Management Situation
The high-performance engine of the S 1000 RR (K46, 0507/0517) has to be run in with
Marketing particular care, as described in the Rider's Manual.
Running in the engine at low to medium rpm and at low to medium load enables the moving
parts to bed in smoothly against each other. BMW Motorrad has ascertained that in isolated

New Motorcycles cases there has been a lack of due compliance with the specified running-in procedure. For
example, within the framework of racetrack use there have been reports of full power being

Motorcycles affected
S 1000 RR (K46, 0507, ECE): From VIN ZV30021 onward
S 1000 RR (K46, 0517, US): From VIN ZV40001 onward
Series solution
Since February 16, 2010, machines coming off the assembly line are programmed with the
limited maximum rpm as standard:
S 1000 RR (K46, 0507, ECE): From VIN ZV33543 onward
S 1000 RR (K46, 0517, US): From VIN ZV40893 onward
Service solution
Before handing over a new motorcycle to its owner, set the limit for running-in rpm as part of
the pre-delivery check (see attached work item 00 60 652 for details).
S 1000 RR (K46, 0507, ECE): From ZV30021 to ZV33542
S 1000 RR (K46, 0517, US): From ZV40001 to ZV40892
Motorcycles that have already been handed over to customers are not affected.

Limit for running-in rpm
Note
running-
It is not permissible to hand over a new motorcycle to a customer unless the limit for running-in rpm has
been set. When handing over the motorcycle, be sure to explain clearly and in detail that the engine's
running-
maximum rpm is limited for the duration of the running-in period.
If the motorcycle's engine is replaced, the new engine's rpm must be limited and the engine
has to be run in strictly in accordance with the running-in procedure.
When a motorcycle is brought to the workshop for its BMW running-in check after 500-
1200 km, the limit for running-in speed has to be deleted: this applied to both the series
solution and the service solution.
This functionality is available as of CIP update 14.4 from March 05, 2010 onward, and ISTA/P
update V37.1 from March 19, 2010 onward.
Maintenance schedule 00 00 119 "BMW running-in check" has been expanded to include the
new task and the number of FRUs increased correspondingly by 1 FRU.
