Advertising is a form of communication used to encourage audiences to continue or take new actions. It is usually paid for by sponsors and clients and featured across various media outlets like print, television, radio and digital. Advertisements seek to generate increased consumption of products and services through branding, which involves repetition of images or names to associate qualities with brands in consumers' minds. Advertisers also promote political parties, organizations and government agencies.
Pharmaca is a pharmacy chain that offers alternative care options such as supplements, herbal remedies, and homeopathic medicines. Research was conducted through focus groups and surveys to understand consumer interest in alternative medicine and perceptions of Pharmaca. The focus groups found that consumers have a lack of knowledge about alternative medicine. Surveys showed consumers were interested in alternative medicine and had an overall positive impression of Pharmaca. Location, promotions, word-of-mouth, and coupons were found to encourage visits to Pharmaca stores. The research provides insight into how Pharmaca can market alternative medicines in the Boston area.
The document is an introduction to communications lecture material that covers:
1) The history of radio through three phases - experimentation with electromagnetic waves in the 19th century, the development of wireless communication in the late 19th century, and the commercialization of radio broadcasting in the early 20th century.
2) The basic components of a communication system including message signals, transducers, transmitters, channels, receivers, and output transducers.
3) Fundamental communication concepts such as signal-to-noise ratio, bandwidth, link budgets, random signals, noise, probability, and random processes.
This document discusses I/O management in operating systems. It covers several key topics:
1. I/O efficiency is important as devices are often slower than CPU and memory. Multiprogramming and swapping are used to optimize efficiency.
2. I/O software is organized into layers, with device drivers translating requests to hardware commands and interrupt handlers processing interrupts from devices.
3. Buffering techniques like single and double buffering in the kernel are used to reduce overhead from small, frequent I/O operations by overlapping computation and I/O.
This document provides an introduction and overview of the COMP3231/9201/3891/9283 Operating Systems course at UNSW. It discusses the course coordinators, prerequisites, lectures, tutorials, assignments, assessment breakdown, textbooks and references. The course aims to educate students in basic OS concepts, hardware characteristics relevant to OS, and tradeoffs faced by OS in supporting applications efficiently. Topics covered include processes, concurrency, memory management, file systems, I/O, scheduling, and possibly security.
This document summarizes research on using smartphones to monitor soundscapes and share acoustic environment data through a social networking app called Hurly-Burly. The goals were to promote sound awareness and better urban soundscapes. Hurly-Burly classified sounds, measured noise levels, and shared metadata through a social network and timeline. User testing found that battery life and privacy concerns impacted use, while sharing automatic sound classifications was preferred over audio clips. Results demonstrated Hurly-Burly's ability to track soundscapes over time and location. Future work includes expanding to other platforms and integrating with existing social networks.
This document discusses the Mconf project's Android client for BigBlueButton web conferencing. It provides an overview of Mconf and the authors, describes the Android client architecture and its main functionalities like public/private chat, voice interaction, video, and administrative controls. The client is compatible with Android 2.0+ and supports joining meetings via links or QR codes. Future plans include improving usability, stability, and integrating presentations. Contributions are welcomed through testing, feedback, translations, or code patches.
