Sammy Gitau grew up in a slum in Kenya, where his father was murdered by a rival gang when Sammy was 11 years old. He supported his mother and 10 siblings by begging for food and scavenging for metal in trash. In 1997, Sammy went into a coma from a drug overdose. After surviving this near-death experience, he dedicated himself to helping children in Mathare by organizing a drug rehabilitation center. It is estimated that his center has helped around 20,000 young people. He also received a scholarship from the University of Manchester.
