Friction is the force that opposes the relative motion between two surfaces in contact with each other. It occurs due to micro welds forming between the bumpy surfaces on a molecular level. There are different types of friction, including static friction before motion occurs, kinetic friction during motion, rolling friction when an object rolls over a surface, and sliding friction when surfaces slide past one another. While friction is necessary for walking, gripping objects, and other functions, it also reduces machine efficiency and causes wear. Therefore, friction is considered a "necessary evil".
