the storyline Threading through Marco Polo’s
Great Trip
Marco Polo was an Italian merchant and explorer
from Venice, who traveled throughout the Far
East and China for much of his life. His stories
were the basis for what much of Europe knew
about Ancient China for many years.
At the age of 17, he started the journey
together with his father and uncle along the
Silk Road to Asia, in order to accomplish the
mission given by the Mongol Emperor Kublai
Khan. He spent 24 years in total, from 1271 to
1295, travelling to and staying in China, and
then took the sea route back to Venice with all
the wealth and wondrous experiences he had
accumulated throughout the trip, which made
him be called Il Milione (The Million). Later he
told his amazing stories to a writer named
Rustichello who wrote them down in a book
called The Travels of Marco Polo.
