Joseph Joffre was the Commander-in-Chief of France during World War 1, a position he had held since 1911. France had been a major European power for most of the 17th and 19th centuries under kings Louis XIV and Napoleon I. However, defeat in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870 ended French dominance and led to the loss of Alsace-Lorraine territory. Princess Sophie was born in 1868 in Stuttgart and married Prince Ferdinand. In 1914, Gavrilo Princip assassinated Princess Sophie and her husband Prince Ferdinand in Sarajevo. Princip shot Princess Sophie in the stomach while she was pregnant, and she died from her injuries. Gavrilo Princip was a Serbian nationalist who killed the royal couple in an attempt to destabilize relations between Austria-Hungary and Serbia.America ww1

The United States remained neutral for the first two and a half years of World War I from 1914 to 1917, though President Woodrow Wilson advocated for neutrality. American public opinion initially supported neutrality as well. In April 1917, after German U-boats sank several American merchant ships, the US declared war on Germany and the Central Powers. Over 200,000 American troops arrived in France in 1918 and helped stop a major German offensive outside of Paris along with French and British forces. Archduke Franz Ferdinand was the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne who was assassinated in 1914 in Sarajevo by Gavrilo Princip, a member of the secret society called the Black Hand. Ferdinand had decided to visit Sarajevo despite warnings, and while riding in a car with his wife, their driver took a wrong turn and stopped near where Princip was waiting. The Battle of the Somme took place from July 1 to November 18, 1916 along the Somme River in France. It was one of the largest and bloodiest battles of World War I, resulting in over 1 million casualties between British, French, and German forces. The Somme River is located in Picardy, northern France. Life in the trenches during the battle was miserable, as soldiers lived in wet and dirty conditions with little food and water. They resorted to eating disgusting things like fried lice. Eamonn Ceannt was an Irish revolutionary born in 1881 who was involved in smuggling weapons and founding the Irish Volunteers. He participated in the 1916 Easter Rising as commander of the Fourth Battalion, taking control of the South Dublin Union. In this region of Brazil, food is based on the use of ingredients such as corn and pork, and one of its most typical dishes is "virado á paulista", with "tutu de feijão" (pasta of cooked beans and cassava flour), pork chops, sausages, fried bananas, and eggs, served with a garnish of vegetables.

- 6. Interesting FACTS São Paulo has the largest population, industrial complex, and economic production in the country. It is the richest state in Brazil. The capital , São Paulo, is also the largest city in South America (and the Southern Hemisphere).
- 7. Currency • Brazilian currency is called Real (pronounced 'rey-al') and the plural is Reas (pronounced 'ray- eyes'). Banknotes come in: 1, 5, 10, 50, and 100, while coins can be found in: 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 Reas. It can be very difficult to come across small banknotes and change in Brazil so you should try to hold on to them for small purchases and use larger bills in hotels and major restaurants where they will have change for you.

It was in 1990 that she became well known when chosen to be a "Paquita" for Xuxa Show. • Rita Guedes is one of Brazil's most dazzling and famous actresses. She was born in Catanduva, São Paulo- Brazil .Rita started her acting career at 9 years old. At age 14, Rita joined a professional theater company in São Paulo.
