The tiger is the largest cat species, reaching up to 3.38 meters long and weighing up to 388.7 kg. It is recognizable by its vertical dark stripes on orange fur. Tigers once ranged widely across Asia but have lost 93% of their historic range over the past 100 years. There are currently estimated to be around 5,000 tigers remaining across 13 countries in Asia. Several conservation programs and systems like Project Tiger in India have helped increase wild tiger populations from 1,827 in the early 1970s to over 2,200 currently.

CITES is an international governance network employing tools and measures
which adapt and become more efficient with time. One measure specifically
aimed at protecting the tiger is visible in the network’s efforts to ban the
trade of tigers or tiger derivatives.
In order for CITES to work effectively it requires the involvement of
institutions, NGOs, civil society and member states: especially Asian tiger
range member countries. The Tiger Range Countries (TRC) – countries where
tigers still roam free –
are: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Lao
PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, Thailand, Vietnam and North-Korea.
24. India:
Project Tiger, started in 1972, is a major effort to conserve the tiger
and its habitats in India. At the turn of the 20th century, one estimate
of the tiger population in India placed the figure at 40,000, yet an
Indian tiger census conducted in 1972 revealed the existence of only
1827 tigers.
Launched on 1 April 1973, Project Tiger has become
one of the most successful conservation ventures in
modern history. The project aims at tiger conservation
in specially-constituted 'tiger reserves', which are
representative of various bio-geographical regions
falling within India. It strives to maintain viable tiger
populations in their natural environment. Today, there
are 27 Project Tiger wildlife reserves in India,
covering an area of 37,761 km².
25. Project Tiger is a Tiger conservation programme launched in 1973 by
the Government of India under its then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
During the tiger census of 2006, Based on the result of these surveys, the
total tiger population has been estimated at 1,411 individuals ranging from
1,165 to 1,657 adult and sub-adult tigers of more than 1.5 years of
age. Owing to the project, the number of tigers has improved to 2226 as
per the latest census report released on January 20, 2015.
Project Tiger is administered by the National Tiger Conservation
Authority.
27. The various tiger reserves were created in the country based on
'core-buffer' strategy:
For each tiger reserve, management plans were drawn up
based on the following principles:
 Elimination of all forms of human exploitation and biotic
disturbance from the core area and rationalization of activities in
the buffer zone.
 Restricting the habitat management only to repair the damages
done to the ecosystem by human and other interferences so as
to facilitate recovery of the ecosystem to its natural state
 Monitoring the faunal and floral changes over time and carrying
out research about wildlife
