The 1960 Summer Olympics were held in Rome, Italy from August 25 to September 11. A total of 5,338 athletes from 83 countries participated in 150 events across 17 sports. The Soviet Union topped the medal table with 43 gold medals and 103 total medals. Some notable results included Armin Hary of Germany winning the 100m in a new Olympic record time and Soviet gymnasts sweeping 15 of 16 possible medals in women's gymnastics. It was the first and only time the Olympics have been held in Italy.
