SCIENCE & REALITY
YOUNGS DOUBLE
SLIT EXPERIMENT
WHAT IS IT?
First conducted in 1801 by Thomas Young
Light passed through a barrier with two slits (before it usually
passed through a single slit to make the light coherent)
The light diffracted through each slit
 Created interference pattern
PARTICLES VS. WAVES
PARTICLE
 If light acts as a
particle, only two slits
will appear on the
screen
WAVE
 The light will diffract
and interfere, making
many fringes
WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?
This proves light acts not only as a particle,
but also as a wave!
Many Photon Interference
Acquisition Time: .1 sec
Attenuation: 3 optical depths
Amplification: x1
SINGLE PHOTON
When a single photon is used, wave
interference is still present
But It is impossible for a photon to act as a
wave as it is can only go through one slit
If one slit is blocked, there is no interference
Single Photon Interference
Acquisition Time: .1 sec
Attenuation: 3 optical depths
Amplification: x200
Single Photon Interference
Acquisition Time: 1 sec
Attenuation: 3 optical depths
Amplification: x100
IMPORTANT OBSERVATIONS
When path of photon is unknown, fringes are
observed
When path of photon is known, fringes
are not observed
SUMMARY
 Youngs Double Slit Experiment
Fringes were observed under high intensity, as
well as with only a single photon.
 Interferometer
Fringes were observed under high intensity as
well as with only a single photon.
When either path of the interferometer was
blocked, fringes were not observed.
CONCLUSION
Single photons behaved the same way as
the high intensity beam.
In the double slit experiment, the single
photon appeared to interfere with itself
going through both slit simultaneously.
In the interferometer the single photon
appeared to take both paths simultaneously
 blocking a path removed interference
fringes.
Is Reality Objective?
SCIENCE V/S SPIRITUALITY
Science believes
 Everything is made
up of matter
 Demonstrable
through
experiments.
Spirituality advocates
 Pure Spirit is reality
 A subject matter of
consciousness
 Can be
experienced but
difficult to
demonstrate in
laboratory.
SCIENCE V/S SPIRITUALITY
Science
 Physical senses
are our only means
of obtaining
knowledge
Spirituality
 By transcending
the limitation of
senses only true
knowledge can be
experienced.
SCIENCE V/S SPIRITUALITY
Science
 Denies existence
of anything that is
supernatural,
supraphysical or
extrasensory.
Spirituality
 Emphasis
harnessing of
subtler and causal
realms.
SCIENCE V/S SPIRITUALITY
Science
 Life is
manifestation of
bio-chemical and
bio-physical matter
.
Spirituality
 Life is
manifestation of
Supreme
Consciousness
 Has some purpose
and order.
WHO AM I?
We identify ourselves with body, mind, intellect and
ego
This is not real because we did not exist 100 years
ago and will not exist 100 years from now.
What is real is our SELF, the Atma which never is
born or dead.
This awareness, consciousness, soul, SELF, the
Atman in the individual is the SELF, the Atman in
all. We are part of the all pervasive Divinity. So,
there is Divinity in all of us.

HOW TO LIVE SPIRITUALLY
Through Selfless Action (Karma YOGA) we attain
union with Divinity.
When you do your activities with no desire for
rewards, we can steady the mind and direct to
Divinity.
Learn to be unattached to, or unaffected by, the
results of our work, whether favorable or
unfavorable.
Desire for the rewards of our acts brings worry
about failing and robs your energy.
Without desire, we are more effective with inner
peace.
HOW TO LIVE SPIRITUALLY
 Give more than we receive
Sacrifice is not self neglect; it is sharing
The entire life can be a sacrifice if directed to
Divinity
This Divine attitude to karma accrues no karma
Eat food in the spirit of sacrifice
Each selfless act by one and all is a contribution to
the whole
HOW TO LIVE SPIRITUALLY
 Pain and pleasure go together
Be the same in both pain and pleasure
Over time learn to handle victory and defeat the
same; not elated by good fortune or depressed by
misfortune
Remain tranquil and centered in the Atma
we become even minded and illumined
Meditate deeply to gain freedom from worldly
attachments; with thoughts fixed on the Divine, we
overcome sorrow.
HOW TO LIVE SPIRITUALLY
The cycle of Birth and Death is inevitable; prepare
for death and birth. Next birth depends on how
ones death is approached
The three paths (Bhakti, Jnana and Karma) lead to
salvation and oneness with Divinity; no more
motivating force to create another birth
 Divinity is the cosmic unity amongst all of us;
oneness with everyone and everything. Then, we
can do no harm. There are no foes.
Oneness with Atma cannot injure the same Atma in
others
HOW TO LIVE SPIRITUALLY
Find happiness within self, not with the worldly
pleasures
The pleasure from worldly things are temporary
and lead to misery
Control desire, anger, pride, passion, jealousy and
greed, one will find lasting happiness
Happiness can flow only from within; from the
Atma that is in you self realization
The bliss is in direct proportion to disentaglement
from worldy attractions
HOW TO LIVE SPIRITUALLY
We are not the doers; we are the instrument of
Divinity
Learn to love Divinity in everything
Seek refuge utterly in the Divine; no
individuality independent of Divinity
Total shelter leads to great peace of mind; less
stress and suffering
Walk the three paths: bhakti yoga, karma yoga
and jnana yoga
