Over the centuries, as new technologies have been introduced to help students with their education, teachers and administrators have often criticized students for relying too heavily on these technologies and not learning traditional methods. Critics in 1703 worried about what students would do without slates. Those in 1815 argued students relied too much on paper and not slate. The 1907 critique was about dependence on ink and pens instead of pencils. Later concerns included dependence on store-bought ink in 1929, fountain pens in 1941, and ballpoint pens in 1950.
