#7: Now the dream for all of us is high speed broadband at affordable prices.
#8: And I’d like you to image a future where bandwidth is no longer the bottleneck.
#9: Where we can upload a terabyte of photos of videos in minutes instead of weeks.
#10: where we can care for the elderly by allowing for a high quality doctor’s visit right to the home through ultra high definition telemedicine
#11: Where smart devices and the internet of things can be clustered together and the information stored on the cloud
#12: where wearables and health-related devices can share freely - even if each device doesn’t require much bandwidth, the 30-50 billion devices that are projected to be developed certainly will.
#13: Where shopping can be immersive, interactive and 3D if desired.
#14: We all know here in San Francisco, the problem with wireless in not having coverage - but having capacity. What most people don’t realize is that cell towers are most often actually wired to the cloud. So, the more density of people, the more wireless towers we need. The more wireless towers - the more wired infrastructure - not less wired infrastructure we need.
#15: Imagine all the cool interactive experiences we can get when bandwidth isn’t a bottleneck. What can you create and develop with such capacity?
#16: Okay - perhaps these aspirations are too big. Let’s just hope for something closer and more imminent. How about watching an Ultra HD movie without having Netflix buffer!
#17: Believe it or not. Telcos want the same dream as you. They want to sell more broadband services. But, unfortunately, they live in a nightmare.
#18: They are stuck with two horrible choices. The first choice is DSL. DSL - for most practical applications taps out at about 30 megabits per second. Under ideal scenarios - perhaps it can get up to 50Mbps or even 80. But realistically, it’s not go to get us very far.
#19: So, the dream has been fiber to the home. Unfortunately, it is very expensive. Much more expensive than you realize. At prices consumers are unwilling to pay - it takes about 12-14 years to break even. At prices consumers ARE willing to pay - it will take over 20 years. Now, imagine your a company like AT&T and you have over 100 million homes to cover and it costs an extra $1,000 or so to deploy fiber. This is over $100 billion. Now, imagine telling your lender you will pay that $100 billion back in 20 years. It’s never going to happen.
#20: That is why the large telcos got together in 2011 in an organization call the ITU - which is the leading standards organization for communications and came up with a new technology called G.fast.
#21: G.fast is an amazing technology and Sckipio is the first company to build silicon for this technology.
#22: With G.fast, consumers will achieve up to 1 gigabits per second over their phone lines.
#23: Consumers will be able to get better upstream and downstream data rates - this is perfect for today’s user-generated content lifestyle.
#24: One central difference is telcos don’t need to install new wiring. This eliminates trenching, installation fees, in-home visits, and more.
#25: One big problem has been accessing apartments. G.fast provides the most viable way for telco-based ISPs to deliver ultra broadband to MDU environments. This is due to a breakthrough called vectoring which allows for excellent performance on twisted pair wiring - even when the wires are bundled together.
#26: All of this elimination of labor will save up to three quarters of a trillion dollars that will be passed along to consumers.
#27: And because right of way issues and trenching and other labor intensive efforts are eliminated, nations can roll out G.fast up to 4 times faster - giving us all fast broadband more quickly.
#28: I know what you are all thinking. When can I get this?
#30: The standard is complete, chips are shipping in volume, device makers are making equipment. Service providers are testing already and even field trials are already underway
