Scott Williams, a SUNY Cortland alum and now a television screenwriter and executive producer, visited his alma mater to share his experiences with students. Williams has worked on popular shows such as "NCIS," "Bones," "Castle," and "Without a Trace." He spoke to a video production class about his career path, including his time at SUNY Cortland in the 1970s as a football player and bartender, and how he was asked to leave after one semester due to poor grades. Williams discussed the ups and downs of his career over the years and how he achieved success despite facing obstacles.

student Scott Williams visited his alma mater
Wednesday and Thursday to share his expe-
riences with students as a television series
screenwriter and executive producer.
Williams has worked on many popular shows
such as “NCIS,” “Bones,” “Castle,” and “With-
out a Trace.” In Williams’ visit Wednesday to
a Video Production class at SUNY Cortland,
he went into depth about his ups and downs
over the years and how he got where he is now
despite many obstacles.
Williams started with the time he spent at
SUNY Cortland in the late 1970s. As a football
player, bartender at the Dark Horse Tavern,
and a physical education major, Williams was
having the time of his life. Then after one se-
mester, reality set in and he was asked to leave
Cortland because of his poor grades.
“I did not have a stellar college career and I
flunked out after one semester,” Williams said.

The NeXT Generation robotics team from Tully, New York has qualified for the First Lego League World Championship in St. Louis and the North American championship in California. The team uses complex computer programs and math equations to direct a robot to complete tasks like catapulting balls. Through the First Lego League, the middle school students on the team have learned skills like problem solving and teamwork. Their coach believes the competition has helped the students grow socially as they have learned to communicate, work together, and speak publicly. The robotics program has expanded in the Tully school district and now includes 65 students on various teams.

1) The East River Dairy Farm in New York milks 1,000 cows from four family farms. While one family used to have cattle, the farmer says dairy farming is more profitable, bringing in over 12% of income. 2) Organic dairy farms have more stable pricing than conventional farms and are cushioned against fluctuations in milk prices. They receive a base price along with incentives for milk quality. 3) The yogurt industry has increased demand for milk in New York, which is the top yogurt producing state. However, the number of dairy farms in Cortland County has decreased in recent years due to economic challenges including fluctuations in milk prices.

Small dairy farms are struggling financially and many have gone out of business in recent years. Harold White used to own a small dairy farm but switched to beef cattle 10-15 years ago because the costs of operating a small dairy farm, like equipment, taxes, and labor, were prohibitive. While the remaining dairy farms in the county are larger and more productive, farmers still struggle with volatile milk prices and high costs. A new program has been proposed to help farmers pay their milk insurance premiums by allowing cooperatives and companies to spread payments out over the entire year.

A Cortland native named Joey Maynard has opened a barbecue food truck called Pig Vycious in Cortlandville. After working in restaurants as a teen and living in the South where he sampled various barbecue styles, Maynard was inspired to bring barbecue to the Cortland community. He purchased a food truck last year and invested $35,000 in renovations, serving pulled pork, brisket, ribs and sandwiches. Maynard hopes to partner with local schools and organizations to give back to the community and become a staple of the area.

Randall Lewis, owner of Linani's Catering, recently opened the Sherman House Restaurant in Homer, New York to bring casual dining with ambience to customers. Lewis has been working in the food business in Homer since 1997 and hopes the restaurant will be as familiar and well-supported as his catering company. Currently open for lunch and dinner a few days a week, Lewis plans to expand the menu and hours of the Sherman House Restaurant over time.

How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow

Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits. To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups. Technology For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did. While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis. Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad. Age and Gender When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same. Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers. Race Affects Attitudes As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).
