Philip Rosedale quit his position as CTO at RealNetworks and started Linden Lab in 1999, investing $1 million of his own money into creating an online virtual world called Second Life. Mitch Kapor, founder of Lotus Development, invested $2.93 million in Linden Lab in 2001. By 2010, Linden Lab had raised a total of $30.7 million in funding to develop Second Life as an objective-driven but user-created virtual world.
