Mary is an unpleasant and disagreeable child who is bad-tempered and not independent. She relies heavily on her Ayah servant and only knows how to say bad words. A child makes up a rhyme making fun of Mary, who does not like it. Mary is brought to her uncle's house by Mrs. Medlock and given food, but her new Ayah Martha does not know how to serve her, thinking Mary is a native, which angers Mary.
