This document provides an overview and agenda for a class on recognizing and working with Resource Description and Access (RDA) metadata and MARC records. The class will cover identifying RDA records, new MARC fields defined for RDA, prominent changes in cataloging practice, core elements in RDA, and practicing working with RDA catalog records. The document defines RDA as the new cataloging standard replacing AACR2 and discusses how RDA is used with MARC and the Library of Congress-Program for Cooperative Cataloging Policy Statements.

Editor's Notes

  • #2: This is your official welcome.Im Beth Thornton..The focus of this class is the MARC record itself. What are the new fields? How does it differ from an AACR2 MARC record? How do you update it?
  • #4: Note that we are still using MARC for cataloging. Just creating records using different instructions
  • #5: Note the word Instructions. Not calling them rules anymore.Show the toolkit. and table of contents.important to note here that best practice in applying RDA is still a work in progress. The JSC is still processing change requests. I think the RDA records we see now will evolve. This will be obvious as we start to look at examples. Already practice is evolving.
  • #6: Field: denoted by the marc tagIndicators further refine the meaning/ function of the fieldA field can have one or more subfields.Subfields denoted by dilemeters. Note that delimeter signs can be $ or | or ISBD punctuation: for now well still use it!
