Global Business Incubation (GBI) is a non-profit organization founded in 1991 to promote business incubation for startups through networking and partnerships between colleges, universities, government and industry. The Semantic Seed program was established in 2008 as a co-working space and idea accelerator to help first-time entrepreneurs struggling to find funding by providing experience, skills and networks to accelerate companies from the idea stage to revenue generation. Semantic Seed operates co-working facilities focused on software, mobile, media and gaming in San Jose, Miami and Sunnyvale that also host weekly meetups, camps and seminars for entrepreneurs and developers.

With tech startups rapidly eating into traditional sectors, large organizations face an increased pressure to innovate. The challenge is that traditional innovation approaches are broken. A recent study revealed that only 5% of R&D staff feel highly motivated to innovate. In certain sectors, more than 85% of new products fail and an overwhelming 90% of companies consider they are too slow in launching new products and services.
The weaknesses of traditional innovation approaches have led some organizations to explore different avenues and seek new inspiration. These organizations have launched innovation centers in major technology hubs with the explicit mandate to accelerate digital innovations. These innovation centers, comprising teams of people and often physical sites, are established in a global tech hub. The goal is to leverage the ecosystem of startups, venture capitalists, accelerators, vendors, and academic institutions that these hubs provide.
We interviewed leaders of innovation centers and conducted an extensive research study of the 200 largest companies in the world to identify best practices and critical success factors.
Global technology hubs are the preferred destinations for setting up innovation centers. 60% of companies that have set up these centers have a presence in the Silicon Valley but many more hubs are emerging the top 10 cities in our analysis represent only 33% of total innovation centers. The US had the largest share with 31% of total innovation centers closely followed by Europe at 30% & Asia at 22%. Penetration varies significantly between sectors; manufacturing is a clear leader at 58%, but despite facing increasing pressures from digital disruptions, Financial Services lags at only 28%.
Innovation centers offer a range of benefits. They:

Drive employee engagement
Build a culture of innovation.
It is extremely challenging to make a success of innovation centers. The long list of critical success factors is a testimony to the size of the challenge. These factors range from clarity on the role of the innovation center to governance for innovation implementation. For example, innovation centers should not peer so far out into the future that it becomes disconnected from current realities. But, it should not confine itself too closely to the parents current operations to make breakthrough innovation impossible.
The advent of thriving technology hubs has created an innovation ecosystem that traditional organizations can tap into. By combining the culture and approach of innovation centers with their budget firepower and access to markets and customers, traditional organizations have an excellent opportunity to re-energize their innovation capability. With tech startups rapidly eating into traditional sectors, large organizations face an increased pressure to innovate. The challenge is that traditional innovation approaches are broken. A recent study revealed that only 5% of R&D staff feel highly motivated to innovate. In certain sectors, more than 85% of new products fail and an overwhelming 90% of companies consider they are too slow in launching new products and services.
The weaknesses of traditional innovation approaches have led some organizations to explore different avenues and seek new inspiration. These organizations have launched innovation centers in major technology hubs with the explicit mandate to accelerate digital innovations. These innovation centers, comprising teams of people and often physical sites, are established in a global tech hub. The goal is to leverage the ecosystem of startups, venture capitalists, accelerators, vendors, and academic institutions that these hubs provide.
We interviewed leaders of innovation centers and conducted an extensive research study of the 200 largest companies in the world to identify best practices and critical success factors.
Global technology hubs are the preferred destinations for setting up innovation centers. 60% of companies that have set up these centers have a presence in the Silicon Valley but many more hubs are emerging the top 10 cities in our analysis represent only 33% of total innovation centers. The US had the largest share with 31% of total innovation centers closely followed by Europe at 30% & Asia at 22%. Penetration varies significantly between sectors; manufacturing is a clear leader at 58%, but despite facing increasing pressures from digital disruptions, Financial Services lags at only 28%.
Innovation centers offer a range of benefits. They:

It is extremely challenging to make a success of innovation centers. The long list of critical success factors is a testimony to the size of the challenge. These factors range from clarity on the role of the innovation center to governance for innovation implementation. For example, innovation centers should not peer so far out into the future that it becomes disconnected from current realities. But, it should not confine itself too closely to the parents current operations to make breakthrough innovation impossible.
The advent of thriving technology hubs has created an innovation ecosystem that traditional organizations can tap into. By combining the culture and approach of innovation centers with their budget firepower and access to markets and customers, traditional organizations have an excellent opportunity to re-energize their innovation capability. Context. Testing is essential to improve the correctness of software systems. Metamorphic testing (MT) is an approach especially suited when the system under test lacks oracles, or they are expensive to compute. However, building an MT environment for a particular domain (e.g., cloud simulation, model transformation, machine learning) requires substantial effort.
Objective. Our goal is to facilitate the construction of MT environments for specific domains.
Method. We propose a model-driven engineering approach to automate the construction of MT environments. Starting from a meta-model capturing the domain concepts, and a description of the domain execution environment, our approach produces an MT environment featuring comprehensive support for the MT process. This includes the definition of domain-specific metamorphic relations, their evaluation, detailed reporting of the testing results, and the automated search-based generation of follow-up test cases.
Results. Our method is supported by an extensible platform for Eclipse, called Gotten. We demonstrate its effectiveness by creating an MT environment for simulation-based testing of data centres and comparing with existing tools; its suitability to conduct MT processes by replicating previous experiments; and its generality by building another MT environment for video streaming APIs.
Conclusion. Gotten is the first platform targeted at reducing the development effort of domain-specific MT environments. Typically work-at-home professionals or independent contractors or people who travel frequently end up working in relative isolation. Co working is the social gathering of a group of people, who are still working independently, but who share values and who are interested in the synergy that can happen from working with talented people in the same space. Some co working spaces were developed by nomadic internet entrepreneurs seeking an alternative to working in coffee shops and cafes, or to isolation in independent or home offices. Business accelerators, business incubators and executive suites do not seem to fit into the co working model, because they often miss the social, collaborative, and informal aspects of the process, with management practices closer to that of a Cooperative, including a focus on community rather than profit. Many of the co working participants are also participants in Bar Camp and other related open source technology activities groups.
