Septic arthritis is a joint infection caused by the invasion of an infectious agent into a joint, causing inflammation. Common symptoms include redness, heat, pain and decreased mobility in a single joint. It can be caused by joint injuries, surgeries, medical conditions like diabetes, or IV drug use. Diagnosis involves testing synovial fluid, blood, and imaging the joint. Treatment consists of antibiotics for several weeks, fluid drainage from the joint, and sometimes surgery, along with NSAIDs and physical therapy.
2. DEFINITION
• Septic arthritis, also known as joint infection or infectious arthritis, is the invasion of
a joint by an infectious agent resulting in joint inflammation. Symptoms typically include
redness, heat and pain in a single joint associated with a decreased ability to move
the joint.
6. CAUSES AND RISK FACTORS
• Joint infections or damages
• Arthrocentesis
• Joint replacement surgery
• Corticosteroid therapy
• HIV
• Hemophilia
• Hemodialysis
• Chronic medical illness, diabetes mellitus, lung ,liver and cancer
• Psoriasis
• IV drug abuse
• Taking medication for RA
8. CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
• Septic arthritis symptoms may include:
• Chills.
• Fatigue and generalized weakness.
• Fever.
• Inability to move the limb with the infected joint.
• Severe pain in the affected joint, especially with movement.
• Swelling (increased fluid within the joint)
• Warmth (the joint is red and warm to touch because of increased blood flow)
9. DIAGNOSTIC TESTS
• Synovial fluid analysis
• Blood culture
• CBC
• Culture of joint fluid
• ESR or C reactive protein
• X-ray
• CT AND MRI
10. MEDICAL MANAGEMENT
• Antibiotics:- to treat infections for 2weeks
• Fluid aspiration from affected joints to relieve pressure and analysis
• Surgery to drain the infected joint fluid, arthrotomy and Arthroscopy to
remove dead cells and exudate
• NSAID AND PHYSIOTHERAPY
