How cults use our urge to conform
@BOBGOWER /
My Cult Story Ideological intensity and high control / high demand.
My obsessive question. Changed the way I approach life, relationships and work.
Solomon Asch
Most people, most of the time will conform to join in with a group. Even if its not sensical.
But you know this already.
Heres how cults do it other groups do this too of course.
Leaving = Death
Humans arent impressive on our own. We need groups to survive.
Our ability to bond with others is unusual in the animal world.
Except for sociopaths.
Hyper Sociality allows us to form a lot if different kinds of groups (other hyper-social species are stuck with one kind of group).
They help us be our best and do amazing things.
This ability to form many different kinds of groups is our species super power
But theres a dark side to groups.
