May be we are looking for our identity with no reason at all. Perhaps Identity is
something that just now is running through our red corpuscles and by every beat of our
heart spreads throughout our body to assuage our spirits and reflects on every detail of
our behaviors and also paints its seal on our mind productions and behaviors. It is true
that searching for identity probably could help to identify historical origins of behaviors and
intellections but in fact we identify past events by our current perception and we cover
events and intellections by a layer of our today mental sediment just the same as past
generation who covered ancestors behaviors and thoughts by their interpretations and
perceptions. May be it is useless to carve mental sediment to find original center of our
identity because even if we achieved that but we are not be able to identify it perfectly.
It is as if an adult person wants to identify his childhood thoughts for following them
now. While your hands, feet and heart shaped by today conditions and lead you in any
direction they want, then what could do the yesterdays mind. Suppose that you identified
Childhood Mind then what do you want to do with hand and foot and heart? The organs
want to run but the mind likes them to toddle. The result of this contradiction looks
ridiculous and we are familiar with social forms of that. We know many examples of such
Historical-Physiological contradictions in art. We, particularly my generation is full of this
conflicts. The opposition between realistic part and theoretical mind, and these conflicts
were recorded on papers, canvases and films which remained of past generation. You
cantfindawayout.Thehandsandfeetwhichtrainedforrunningcannottoddle;butmany
artists who belong to my generation pretended doing this. The consequence, whatever it
is, again reveals historical identity of a generation that grew up but was toddling yet and
also tended people discover that they experienced childhood too!
My generation uncovered this reality. You cannot find whatever you search for in merely
theoretical books, but looking at artistic works will help you to disclose that. It is the
character of artistic works that the behaviors of people (not their ideas) recorded on them
and you can discover the artist ideas and believes by analyzing his behaviors.
I believe that Farshid Shafie is one of the distinguished artists disappointed of this much
grumpy ineffectual show stepped in to the way of his heart with free hands and mind to
entrust himself to current history and may it happen, let it happen! He went in this way
and the result was a playful and lighthearted collection which shows his present identity
more and better than any thoughtful work. In his illustrations, posters, calligraphy, brief
texts and even personal photographs he recorded by his behaviors something which is
explicit visual signs of his social-historical identity.
He trained and trained. He laid aside the past but never try to carve layer by layer
historical sediments of his experiments to find the central point which called identity.
It is his intelligence that search for identity in the external layer of phenomenon which
was entrusted him and granted to implicit intellection experts the traveling to its depth
for inquiring origins. The next generation after him proved that Farshid Shafie was right.
And which achievement is greater than this? His castle is established on top of this
mountain.
