A Book Review of “Suburban Warriors: The Origins of the New American Right”
Introduction
Lisa McGirr’s text, “Suburban Warriors: The Origins of the New American Right”
supported Right-Wing politics in the United States. Even though the Right of the movement may
have been established from prejudice ideas, racial equality became the “positive outcome”
because of the political movements (anti-Communism, grass-root conservatives, and social
conservatives) that were meant to separate the conservatism and communism. In fact, the Orange
County area of California called for economic freedom. Eventually, institutions were developed
to educate people who inhabited the area of anti-communism ideas. The movement didn’t just
limit itself to the Sunbelt region of the developed economy of the United States, but also
progressed further into the United States with the support of religious organizations.
Orange County was the heart of many political movements. After the new Right was
established, activism began to support this new idea of socialism for the area. A new focus
developed for professionals when the movement began to progress further into the national
economy. In fact, researchers and social scientists were able to focus on issues that related to
minority groups and lower social classes. What started as a large group of grass-root
conservatives, ended as qualitative support for American progress. To explain, these social
conservatives provided much needed support toward minority groups and lower social classes

who inhabited the Orange County area of California. In fact, racial equality became a major
focus of the social conservatives.
Argumentative
Even though the main issue became equality with the social conservatives, the Right of
this anti-Communism and grass-root conservative movement was for the superior race of Whites.
For that reason, radical groups such as the Supremist and Ku Klux Klan were expected to be the
ones who should benefit the most from the movement. Likewise, people believed that the anti-
Communist movement was for the main interest of the capitalist.
During this time of equality, other movements such as the gay rights began forming
within the Orange County area of California. Most Christians who lived within the area
perceived the gay rights as a way to corrupt American principles. Eventually, this lead to the
support of abortion rights. This new obscenity and support of gay rights began influencing
educators to provide new education to students within the class rooms of Orange County: sex
education. Even though this may be true, homosexuals were only part of the problem.
Homosexuality became such an issue within the Orange County area that the educators had to
establish school policies which prohibited the activity among the school faculty. Homosexuality
wasn’t recognized by the political sector.
Anti-Communism
During the early 1960s, conservatism was limited because of its restraints that were tied
to communism. Anaheim was the heart of an anti-communism movement. This movement found
qualitative aid “from the Orange County Freedom Forum and the California Free Enterprise
Association to the Californians’ Committee to Combat Communism and the Citizens for

Fundamental Education” (McGirr, 56). In fact, a school was established within the area to provide
education against communism—some of the first anti-communist schools were established
before the early 1960s. This provided job creation for teachers and educators. Dr. Fred Schwartz,
who was a medical professional within the Orange County area of California, compared
communism to a disease.
Regardless, anti-Communism education was the heart of Right-wing politics within the
Orange county area of California. The anti-communism area of Orange County wasn’t only
known for the city of Anaheim, but for Huntington Beach as well. Youth organizations were also
established to support a future of political vicing within the area. Several other groups were
established as well—most of which were developed to target communism within the State of
California. Additional support was provided by ex-military personal. Thereafter, grass-root
conservative movements began to develop within the Orange County area of California.
Among all of this support was also the Roman Catholic Church. Likewise, other world
renown organizations such as the United Nations also combatted communism. Another
great way to take a stand against communism was with the press. These anti-communism
activities didn’t just occur over the late 1950s and early 1960s, but rather over the duration of
two decades.
Anti-Semitism and the Conservative Grass-Root Movement
Movements were lead within the Orange County area of California which focused on
anti-Semitic beliefs. A popular group within that area of California was the grass-root
conservatives. During the early 1960s, the group first developed out of an American Civil
Liberties Union (ACLU) meeting within the greater metropolitan area of Anaheim (56).
Thereafter, their group may have contained thousands of members but were not fundamentally

focused toward a single direction.
This activism for social policy began to progress toward the direction of allegations and
investigations, but from an unjust perspective. This political movement of the grassroots
increased violence within the metropolitan area. Generally, the grass-root conservative
movement began because of the following issues: racial inequality and an insufficient welfare
state (11). The grassroots contained several different types of members, but some of members
included business professionals who may have inhabited the area.
Eventually, the movement progressed more toward a national level rather than just
focusing on the Southern California area of the developed economy of the United States. The
main motivation of these grassroots was a lack of conservative leadership within the national
government. This grass-root conservative movement of the early 1960s developed into a well-
organized group of supporters, professionals, and organizations. An essential part of the
movement was the availability of programs that were available.
An important part of the liberalization of the grass-root conservatives was the John Birch
society. Eventually, the grass-root conservative group “started a library to provided resources and
direction for the grassroots activists” (98). Another important development of the grass-root
conservatives was the development of study groups through random organizations. Activism was
a great way for supporters and members of the grass-root conservative movement to develop his
or her political progress. For this reason, volunteer opportunities were available to supporters and
members of the movement. The number of female supporters within the conservative grass-root
movement showed an increase over the 1960s. Eventually, the grass-root conservative group was
able to provide support to Ronald Reagan which resulted in the victory of seven preliminary
elections.

The Social Conservatives
Social conservatives provided much needed support to the Orange County area of
California. Social conservatives addressed important matters to the well-established
conservatives—one in particular was the issue of abortion. To explain more, social conservatives
provided more support toward issues rather than focusing on economic development. Eventually,
social conservatives began to provide support toward the issue of racial equality.
Equality was only part of the social conservative focus. By the late 1960s, taxation
and state budgets became a major concern. Many sociologist supported the Right-wing
conservative movement of the 1960s. The main value of the social conservatives was their power
of the popular vote. Even though Right-wing conservative activist were against political and
social change, social conservatives “encouraged them to become more vocal” (237). Positive
political progress and socio-economic development within the Sunbelt region of the developed
economy of the United States resulted with great success in regard to the social conservative
movement (13). In regards to agriculture and the issue of low-quality soil within the Sunbelt
region of the United States, suburbanization may have been ideal for the region.
Conclusions
To come to a conclusion, I agree with McGirr’s argument and focus that was in support
of Right-Wing American politics. Capitalist played an important role in the anti-Communism,
grass-root conservative, and social conservative movements which spanned from late-1950s into
the late-1960s. The New Right which was established within the Orange County area of
California was the core of all of these political movements. These political movements lasted for
over twenty years.
Shepler, 6
In the beginning, the grass-root conservative groups were able to acquire over seven-
thousand people just from politicking within the greater metropolitan area of Anaheim. Though,
some of the more important members may have been career professionals from the Orange
County area of California. These well-educated professionals were able to organize resources
which provided much needed support to the movement. The movement became so supportive
that it provided Ronald Reagan with enough support to take the victory of seven preliminary
elections.
In the later years of this political movement, the social conservative group was able to
provide much needed support toward the direction of public issues within the region. During
these two decades, great political progress was made in regards to socio-economic development
and suburbanization within the Sunbelt region of the developed economy of the United States.
Even though Capitalist supported anti-Communism and grass-roots within the Orange County
area of California, the social conservative movement provided educational institutions, job
growth within the education sector, conservative leadership, and a stronger political future within
the Orange County area of California.
