Sherlock Holmes was a character created by Scottish author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Inspired by Doyle's time studying medicine and meeting eccentric patients, Sherlock Holmes first appeared in novels and short stories in the 1880s and 1890s, gaining widespread popularity for his skills in deduction. His address was 221B Baker Street in London and his adversary was Professor Moriarty. Though Doyle killed off the character in 1893, public demand led him to resurrect Holmes in later stories throughout the early 20th century, with Holmes remaining one of the most iconic characters in English literature.
