The Looking Glass
? NEW YEAR'S EVE. Nellie, the
daughter of a landowner and general, a
young and pretty girl, dreaming day
and night of being married, was sitting
in her room, gazing with exhausted,
half-closed eyes into the looking-glass.
She was pale, tense, and as motionless
as the looking-glass.
? Looking at Nellie's motionless eyes and
parted lips, one could hardly say
whether she was asleep or awake, but
nevertheless she was seeing.
? "I must have fallen asleep," she thought
with a sigh of relief.
Clothes
Fragments are flying about my head,
multicolored and piercing sharp like bits
of bangle glass.
¡°I¡¯m lying on the floor now, on the spilled
white sari. I feel sleepy¡.. Sometimes,
bathing at the lake, I would move away
from my friends, their endless chatter. I¡¯d
swim toward the middle of the water
with a lazy backstroke, gazing at the sky,
its enormous blueness drawing me up
until I felt weightless and dizzy. Once in
a while there would be a plane, a small
silver needle drawn through the
clouds¡..
They are knocking on the door now,
calling my name. ¡°

MARRIAGE
In India, arranged marriage is common tradition among the people. Marriage is
not about love from them, but it is about commitment. They believe that
feelings will grow later through process of marriage.
In the arranged marriage, women parents, especially fathers, will search and
decide who will become his daughter¡¯s husband. They do this because they
think marriage has to keep good name of their families.
WIDOWS
Widows are alienated in India. Most of people think that widows are useless
and considered as ¡®failed women¡¯. White sari is a symbol of a widow. It
symbolized the end of woman life. Even there is a ¡®town of widows¡¯ in India.
Background
comparation
? Both of the stories present that widow is a
woman¡¯s bad dream and it is unrespected by
society.
? Both of the stories tell about marriage and
dream of women about their life
