The document provides background information on Frederick Douglass, including key events in his life and roles. It discusses how he was born into slavery in 1818 and escaped in 1838, changing his last name. It outlines his work as an abolitionist, author, orator, and supporter of women's suffrage. It also provides context about the Civil War period and Douglass's involvement in recruiting black regiments to fight.
The document provides a timeline and overview of the history of slavery in America from 1619 through the end of the Civil War in 1865. It discusses how slavery began as a way to address the labor needs of the colonies, and how the slave trade expanded greatly. The Atlantic slave trade resulted in millions of Africans being forcibly transported to America, where they were treated as property and faced cruel conditions. Resistance to slavery grew over time through escapes on the Underground Railroad and abolitionist literature. After the Civil War, African Americans continued facing exclusion through policies like Plessy v Ferguson and racism during the Great Migration and Harlem Renaissance period.

1. The document discusses the growth of abolitionist sentiment in the United States in response to the increasing entrenchment of slavery. It outlines the rise of more radical abolitionists like William Lloyd Garrison who called for the immediate end of slavery without compensation to owners.
2. It focuses on the contributions of important African American abolitionists like David Walker, Frederick Douglass, and Sojourner Truth. David Walker published an influential text in 1829 calling for the end of slavery. Frederick Douglass escaped slavery and became a famous orator and publisher. Sojourner Truth was also a powerful orator who advocated for the abolition of slavery and women's rights.
3. Garrison emerged as a leading white abolition
Analyzing primary and secondary sources of slaverypjkelly
油
This document provides an overview of various aspects of slavery in America, including field work, domestic work, runaway slaves, passive resistance, religion, slave auctions, family, and children. It lists relevant primary and secondary sources for each aspect of slave life. The primary sources are first-hand accounts from slaves and eyewitnesses during the time period, while the secondary sources were written later by people not present at the events. The document serves as a reference guide for sources related to different experiences of slaves in America.
The document provides an overview of literature related to slavery and freedom in the United States. It discusses early slave narratives written by former slaves like Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs that described the inhumane conditions of slavery. These narratives were an important form of resistance that challenged pro-slavery ideologies and influenced the abolitionist movement. The document also examines how early African American writers used Christian themes to connect the ideals of the Declaration of Independence with the fight for racial equality and an end to the hypocrisy of slavery.
This document summarizes forms of resistance by slaves in the Antebellum period, including rebellions, running away, and day-to-day acts of resistance. It discusses the reasons slaves resisted, such as escaping harsh treatment or reuniting with family members. It describes different types of resistance like feigning illness, slowing work, or arson. It also discusses the experiences of runaway slaves and the dangers they faced if captured. The general strain theory is presented as a framework for understanding how the strains of slavery led slaves to develop coping strategies of resistance.

How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
油
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying its good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation thats least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state theyre comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).
AI Trends in Creative Operations 2024 by Artwork Flow.pdfmarketingartwork
油
Creative operations teams expect increased AI use in 2024. Currently, over half of tasks are not AI-enabled, but this is expected to decrease in the coming year. ChatGPT is the most popular AI tool currently. Business leaders are more actively exploring AI benefits than individual contributors. Most respondents do not believe AI will impact workforce size in 2024. However, some inhibitions still exist around AI accuracy and lack of understanding. Creatives primarily want to use AI to save time on mundane tasks and boost productivity.
Organizational culture includes values, norms, systems, symbols, language, assumptions, beliefs, and habits that influence employee behaviors and how people interpret those behaviors. It is important because culture can help or hinder a company's success. Some key aspects of Netflix's culture that help it achieve results include hiring smartly so every position has stars, focusing on attitude over just aptitude, and having a strict policy against peacocks, whiners, and jerks.

Google's Just Not That Into You: Understanding Core Updates & Search IntentLily Ray
油
1. Core updates from Google periodically change how its algorithms assess and rank websites and pages. This can impact rankings through shifts in user intent, site quality issues being caught up to, world events influencing queries, and overhauls to search like the E-A-T framework.
2. There are many possible user intents beyond just transactional, navigational and informational. Identifying intent shifts is important during core updates. Sites may need to optimize for new intents through different content types and sections.
3. Responding effectively to core updates requires analyzing "before and after" data to understand changes, identifying new intents or page types, and ensuring content matches appropriate intents across video, images, knowledge graphs and more.

credibility and the
authenticity of their stories)
Preface by William Lloyd Garrison, founder of the
American Anti-Slavery Society
8. 5. Inside the narrative itself:
a. A first sentence beginning, I was born. . . and then specifying a
place but not a date of birth.
b. A sketchy account of parentage, often involving a white father.
c. Description of a cruel master, mistress, or overseer, details of first
observed whipping and numerous subsequent whippings, with
women very frequently the victims
d. An account of one extraordinarily strong, hardworking slave often
"pure African"-who, because there is no reason for it, refuses to be
whipped
e. Record of the barriers raised against slave literacy and the
overwhelming difficulties encountered in learning to read and write
f. Description of a "Christian" slaveholder (often of one such dying in
terror) and the accompanying claim that "Christian" slaveholders are
invariably worse than those professing no religion
9. g. Description of the amounts and kinds of food and clothing given to
slaves, the work required of them, the pattern of a day, a week, a year
h. Account of a slave auction, of families being separated and destroyed,
of distraught mothers clinging to their children as they are torn from them, of
slave coffles being driven South
i. Description of patrols, of failed attempt(s) to escape, of pursuit by men
and dogs
j. Description of successful attempt(s) to escape, lying by during the day,
travelling by night guided by the North Star, reception in a free state by
Quakers who offer a lavish breakfast and much genial thee/thou conversation
k. Taking of a new last name (frequently one suggested by a white
abolitionist) to accord with new social identity as a free man, but retention of
first name as a mark of continuity of individual identity
l. Reflections on slavery.
10. 6. An appendix or
appendices composed of
documentary material bills of
sale, details of purchase from
slavery, newspaper items-, further
reflections on slavery, sermons,
anti-slavery speeches, poems,
appeals to the reader for funds
and moral support in the battle
against slavery

11. Examples of Slave Narratives
Britain
Olaudah Equiano The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah
Equiano or Gustavus Vassa, the African (1789)
According to his account he was born in what is now Nigeria and enslaved at
11. He was later resold to a British navy officer who did not fulfill his promise
to free him. Instead he resold him to West Indian slavery. Equiano was a clever
businessman and managed to buy his freedom in 1766. He then traveled for
commerce and later married an Englishwoman.
There have been contradictions found between his account and historical
documents, but some scholars think it might have been on purpose.
He published his book by subscription. He convinced buyers to buy copies in
advance to be able to cover his costs. The list of subscribers is part of the book.
His narrative was used as part of a petition to Parliament to end the slave trade.
13. America
Frederick Douglas The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas,
an American Slave (1845)
Born into slavery around 1818 in Talbot County, Maryland.
Became an abolitionist leader and intellectual who advised presidents
and gave lectures.
He was asked by William Lloyd Garrison to write his autobiography and
asked at many abolitionist meetings to tell his story.
In his narrative he tells about his passing from master to master, work in
the plantations and city and about learning to read and write, which
made him aware of the abolitionist movement. Eventually he saves
money and escapes to the North.
Solomon Northup Twelve Years a Slave (1853)
Harriet Jacobs Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861)
14. Harriet Jacobs
Born 1813, died 1897
Born into slavery
Two children with a white lawyer
Fled to the North where she worked in the antislavery reading room
Wrote several anonymous letters to the New York Tribune and other
newspapers
self-published Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl in 1861 under the
pseudonym Linda Brent
16. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl
Discussed during its time
Authenticity long questioned
Letters by Jacobs to Amy Post authenticated the novel (Yellin 1981)
One of the first slave narratives published by a woman
Reflects the horrors women faced during slavery
But I do earnestly desire to arouse the women of the North to a realizing
sense of the condition of two million of women at the South, still in
bondage, suffering what I suffered, and most of them far worse. I want to
add my testimony to that of abler pens to convince the people of the Free
States what Slavery really is (Brent in Andrews, Gates Jr. (2000). p. 745.
