Sleeping sickness is caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma gambiense, which lives in fresh water in Africa and can be transmitted through the bite of an infected tsetse fly. The infection spreads through the bloodstream and can cause symptoms like personality changes, confusion, difficulty walking, fever and headaches if not treated with medicines. Prevention efforts include vaccines.
