- 2. What is Obstetric Nursing? It is a job that is done by both males and females who have gone to a 4-year college and graduated with a degree as a registered nurse . There is a shortage for nurses, so most hospitals are recruiting RNs daily while giving them sign on bonuses. Hospitals, birth centers, and health departments are some facilities where an obstetric nurse works, but you will find most of them in the hospital setting working in the labor and delivery unit. There overall job is to assist the doctor with the delivery, take care of the expecting mother and the newborn before and after birth, and provide the parents with the proper education on how to take care of the of the baby before being discharged home .
- 3. Taking care of the mother You will be responsible for getting preadmission information: current meds,allergies,getting her oriented with her room, and providing her with a id bracelet upon admission Obtain vital signs, draw labs that are needed by the doctor, and get her hooked to the fetal heart monitor Document the progression of the labor in her medical chart and lab results. Provide comfort measures: ice chips, suggesting positions to make her comfortable to make the whole birth process as pleasant to the mother as possible Call the doctor when she is fully dilated at 10 cm to begin the birth process
- 4. Taking care of the baby Monitor the fetal heart rate: it should be between 130-140 beats per min to make sure that the baby is not in distress. Clean the baby up after the birth and provide it with a diaper, t-shirt, hat, and wrap it up in a clean blanket. Then it will be time for the mother to hold her new baby Evaluate the newborn after it has been delivered: check for abnormailites(if there are, the baby will be taken to a special nursery for further evaluation), get vital signs along with foot prints, and provide the baby with an id bracelet. Teach the parents how to bathe, feed, correct sleeping positions, and preventive measures to keep infections down.
- 5. Birth Complications The nurse must quickly and accurately find the nature of the problem and to protect the mother and the baby. Common birth complication: breech births, where the legs or buttocks is in the birth canal and is trying to come before the head A cesarean section will have to be done to deliver the baby :surgical procedure where the mothers abdominal muscles are cut in order to get the baby out safely The nurse is responsible for assisting the doctor in the operation room along with other medical team members Once the baby is delivered, the nurse will be responsible for getting the mother cleaned up and evaluating the baby.

Conclusion Going to school for 4-years to get a degree as a registered nurse and then going on to work in a hospital setting as an obstetric nurse is a rewarding occupation that will pay off in the long run. Not only does the nurse help take care of the expecting mother, her newborn baby, and their family while in the hospital, he or she will be help bring a precious life in the world. Not all deliveries will be easy, so having the proper skills and knowing when to use them is vital amongst all of the other responsibilities nudes have to take on regardless of what field of nursing the go in. if you love to work with people, have good communication skills, and are able to work under pressure, then going to school to be a registered nurse may be right for you.
