Sensory tolerances Sociabilities
Utopia used as a method of imagining a
future bicycle system. Utopia works in an
ontological mode, it becomes manifest in the
practice of cycling, expressing itself in the
very experience, it 'speaks to the level of
affect' (Levitas 2013).
Utopia is used here in an archeological mode
(Levitas 2013): through practices of group cycling
an image of the 'good society' can be recreated.
Cycling awakens dormant senses: equilibrium,
kinaesthesia, pain, thermoception.
Cycling sociabilities often stand in stark contrast
to the functionalist character of road trafﬁc.
Embodying the bicycle requires a slow process of
enskilment; mind and body overcome their
duality.
They generate a new mobile 'interaction
order' (Goffman 1983) which privileges the
informal over the formal understandings of trafﬁc
rules: eye-to-eye contact, shouts and hand
signalling over trafﬁc signals.
Fragile bodies can be trained to appreciate the
gentler and more organic rhythms of
velomobilities.
Different 'Ride-Formations' emerge in group
cycling; they may have very pragmatic functions
to ensure safety or efﬁciency, or they can be very
sociable, allowing various forms of play (aligning
the wheels, changing positions), conversation,
even face-to-face interactions.
Learning to enmesh oneself in pain requires
effort and struggle but also generates
eudaimonic well-being (satisfaction derived from
what is worth doing, in what is perceived as
'meaningful' or 'purposeful').
The sociabilities of group cycling are similar to
the forms of conviviality described by Illich
(1973).
The tactics of building sensory tolerances
conﬁgure slowness as a particular active state of
mind-body-ness, 'a practical disposition, an
orientation to action' (Vannini 2013:116).
Illich’s concept of conviviality could be reframed
to describe not only the autonomy afforded by
one particular technology, but equally the social
interactions and relations which they make
possible.
They reﬂect a desire for what proponents of the
de-growth movement call the quest for 'voluntary
simplicity'.

Măsurile propuse pentru încurajarea ciclismului includ amenajarea de piste de biciclete și adoptarea unor legi care să protejeze drepturile bicicliștilor.

Battle of Bookworms is a literature quiz organized by Pragya, UEM Kolkata, as part of their cultural fest Ecstasia. Curated by quizmasters Drisana Bhattacharyya, Argha Saha, and Aniket Adhikari, the quiz was a dynamic mix of classical literature, modern writing, mythology, regional texts, and experimental literary forms. It began with a 20-question prelim round where ‘star questions’ played a key tie-breaking role. The top 8 teams moved into advanced rounds, where they faced audio-visual challenges, pounce/bounce formats, immunity tokens, and theme-based risk-reward questions. From Orwell and Hemingway to Tagore and Sarala Das, the quiz traversed a global and Indian literary landscape. Unique rounds explored slipstream fiction, constrained writing, adaptations, and true crime literature. It included signature IDs, character identifications, and open-pounce selections. Questions were crafted to test contextual understanding, narrative knowledge, and authorial intent, making the quiz both intellectually rewarding and culturally rich. Battle of Bookworms proved literature quizzes can be insightful, creative, and deeply enjoyable for all.

1. ! Most research on cycling focuses on the infrastructural, economic and legal issues: transport planning (ex: bicycle lanes, bike sharing systems), bikenomics (ex: health benefits, reducing carbon emissions), incentives and protective laws (ex: tax free bikes for work, strict liability for drivers). ! My thesis researches the experiential dimensions of a utopian bicycle system which could challenge the dominant system of automobility (Urry 2004). ! I am exploring: 1) the ways in which cyclists’ sensory tolerances are built and contested; 2) the sociabilities emerging in practices of group cycling. ! I use auto-ethnography and ethnography as means of investigation: solitary cycling, 'ride alongs', video and audio footage are combined to capture velomobilities, to reflect on my enskilment into the practice and to describe how people interact on the move. ! ___________________________ ! Cosmin Popan PhD candidate Lancaster University Slowing down by bike: Velomobilities, sensescapes, sociabilities Sensory tolerances Sociabilities Utopia used as a method of imagining a future bicycle system. Utopia works in an ontological mode, it becomes manifest in the practice of cycling, expressing itself in the very experience, it 'speaks to the level of affect' (Levitas 2013). Utopia is used here in an archeological mode (Levitas 2013): through practices of group cycling an image of the 'good society' can be recreated. Cycling awakens dormant senses: equilibrium, kinaesthesia, pain, thermoception. Cycling sociabilities often stand in stark contrast to the functionalist character of road traffic. Embodying the bicycle requires a slow process of enskilment; mind and body overcome their duality. They generate a new mobile 'interaction order' (Goffman 1983) which privileges the informal over the formal understandings of traffic rules: eye-to-eye contact, shouts and hand signalling over traffic signals. Fragile bodies can be trained to appreciate the gentler and more organic rhythms of velomobilities. Different 'Ride-Formations' emerge in group cycling; they may have very pragmatic functions to ensure safety or efficiency, or they can be very sociable, allowing various forms of play (aligning the wheels, changing positions), conversation, even face-to-face interactions. Learning to enmesh oneself in pain requires effort and struggle but also generates eudaimonic well-being (satisfaction derived from what is worth doing, in what is perceived as 'meaningful' or 'purposeful'). The sociabilities of group cycling are similar to the forms of conviviality described by Illich (1973). The tactics of building sensory tolerances configure slowness as a particular active state of mind-body-ness, 'a practical disposition, an orientation to action' (Vannini 2013:116). Illich’s concept of conviviality could be reframed to describe not only the autonomy afforded by one particular technology, but equally the social interactions and relations which they make possible. They reflect a desire for what proponents of the de-growth movement call the quest for 'voluntary simplicity'.
