The small intestine is part of the gastrointestinal tract located between the stomach and large intestine. It is on average 6.9 meters long in adults and 2.5-3 cm in diameter. The small intestine is divided into three parts - the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. The duodenum receives food from the stomach and digestive juices from the pancreas and gallbladder to aid in digestion. The jejunum is where most absorption of digested food takes place. The ileum further absorbs vitamins, minerals and remaining nutrients before the waste enters the large intestine.

6. ï‚žIt is structurally divided into
three parts:
› duodenum
› jejunum

ï‚žThe duodenum is a short structure
(about 20–25 cm long)
ï‚žcontinuous with the stomach and
shaped like a "C".
ï‚ž It surrounds the head of the
pancreas.
9. ï‚žIt receives gastric chyme from
the stomach, together with
digestive juices from the
pancreas (digestive enzymes)
and the gall bladder

leaflike villi
ï‚žThe duodenum contains Brunner's
glands, which produce a mucus-rich
alkaline secretion containing
bicarbonate.
15. ï‚žThe jejunum is the midsection
of the small intestine,
connecting the duodenum to the
ileum.
16. ï‚žIt is about 2.5 m long, and contains
the plicae circularis, and villi that
increase its surface area.
ï‚žProducts of digestion (sugars,amino
acids, and fatty acids) are
absorbed into the bloodstream

17. ï‚žThe ileum: The final section of the small
intestine. It is about 3 m long, and contains
villi similar to the jejunum.
It absorbs mainly vitamin B12 and bile
acids, as well as any other remaining
nutrients.
