What is your Investigation question/ statement? My investigation is Greek mythology in Hollywood, my investigation will look at how the Greek mythology has change over the years by representation in film. Hollywood will be the film industry I will be focusing on. What were your thoughts on your investigation before carrying out any research? When starting the project I felt confident about carrying out my research both primary and secondary, the reason for me feeling confident about this project is because I really enjoy this style of film, and i hoped to broaden my horizon.
What film is your focus film and why? I have chosen Percy Jackson as my focus film because unlike the other movies i have chosen, this is the most different, the reason for this is unlike Troy, Clash of the Titians (2010) and Jason and the Argonauts, the film is set in the present day, but with all of the same content, to the other movies, this gives the film a unique edge. I believe this film is a still able to reflected Greek mythology, because of the key themes revolving around the film even though it is set in modern times, the Myths have just been adapted to fit into modern environment
What additional films have you chosen and why? For my additional films i have chosen Troy, Clash of the Titians and Jason and the Argonauts, the reason for this is all the films are of the same culture but they all have their own unique differences. Troy is a film of Greek mythology, but is more of a war film to my other two choices, Clash of the Titians is a full throttle action/adventure film and Jason and the Argonauts is an old classic film on Greek mythology . Other reason for me choice these titles is because although they all have there unique differences, they are also very similar in the way they are made. The films have all been made in the same over exaggerated Hollywood way, as all three of these films have been adapted for the big screen.
What have you found out from secondary research? The origins of the films I have chosen, by reading the original stories (Book s, Websites) During my reading the origins of each myth i discovered various differences between the narrative f the film and the story, this is mostly affected in Clash of the Titians, the story is called Perseus and Medusa , the reason for this may be because the story is only about ten minutes long and does not have much content compared to the other two stories which i have read. I found this secondary research very helpful to further my study, this defiantly has aided me for my study to identify how representation of Greek mythology has changed over the years in the Hollywood film industry.
What have you found out from secondary research? Ray Harryhausen created his monster in Jason and the Argonauts ( Visiting the London film museum) When visiting the London film museum to specifically see the Ray Harryhausen exhibition which contained his entire collection of figurines which he created for the original Clash of the Titians and Jason and the Argonauts, the figurines which were created by him where all of the monsters in both movies, by seeing this I discovered how far technology has come since Harryhausens monster masterpieces of early special effects which was stop motion animation. I found this secondary research very helpful to further my study, this defiantly has aided me for my study to identify the technological advancements of Greek Mythology in the Hollywood film industry.
Secondary Research which was not so good: Information from BFI Library books When reading through my extracts from BFI Library, I only discovered a few minor things from this , these were an article on Ray Harryhausen which said Most of what see in cinema is an illusion, but Ray Harryhausens films sets in the ancient Greek mythical world requires a number of extraordinary optical tricks. This statement shows how much special effects has risen in the Ancient Greek genre of film, Ray was seen as the best in the 70s and 80s. The rest of the information i collected wasn't as useful as I planed as most of it was from a critical side of view not one on evolutino of the genre.
Scenes what helped with my investigation Clash of the Titians and Percy Jackson both have an excellent scene each of Medusa, she is represented in a different way s in both films, she is portrayed as a horrible ugly monster in clash of the Titians, but in Percy Jackson she is represented in a more glamorous and friendlier light.
What primary research have you done so far? I have created a questionnaire for survey monkey about Percy Jackson and Clash of the Titians, i have also made paper copies which i intend to present at some stage to the class Primary Research I need to do Focus group Possibly Interviews Forum discussions
