SmartBoard Lesson Plans:
Variables and Expressions

Overview
Variables and expressions were
difficult for me to grasp when I
was a student so having a lesson
plan already created will help me
explain them much easier
Adaptations
Something I saw in the lesson was stating the standards
and objects which is very important to include for both
the student and teacher
I also like the idea of definitions but I would include notes
for the students so that they can write down the
definitions (this helps the information to soak in)
Perhaps before even showing the students the definition, I
would ask them what they think each term means
(inquiry learning)
Using examples like the one to the right, I would make
sure that the students would come up to the board and

Adaptations cont. ● The lesson included how to take a verbal
math expression and make it an algebraic
expression. I would include this by showing
the students examples and then letting them
try it out
● I would also make sure to have my students
practice saying the words and phrases out
loud to ensure that it really sticks
● I really liked the “tips to remember” slide
because students tend to forget what they
have just learned and this will help remind
them
● Finally, I would end the lesson with lots and
lots of practice of all different styles such as
games and of course homework
How Does This
Relate to
Universal Design?
This lesson plan would support
universal design because it involves
visuals, audio, written notes, as well
as options for the students to try
problems on their own and explore the
smartboard. The variety of styles
allows for all students regardless of
learning abilities to participate and
learn the material.
