Snakes have beautiful scales and eyes and use venom mainly to kill prey. Venom is produced in salivary glands and injected through hollow fangs into prey's flesh. While snakes have poor vision, they can detect movement and smell with their tongue, picking up chemical cues about potential prey. Their skin has two layers - a soft dermis containing nerves and pigment, and outer scales made of hard keratin that protect the snake and are shed regularly.
