Is closely knit and has strong family ties.
Is usually an extended one
Kinship ties are extended to include the
compadre or sponsors.
In Asian Family
A great difference exists in the roles of man
and woman.
FUNCTIONS OF THE FAMILY
 Reproduction of the race and rearing of the young.
 Cultural transmission or enculturation.
 Socialization of the child.
 Providing affection and a sense of security.
 Providing the environment for personality
development and the growth of self-concept in
relation to others.
 Providing social status

Hierarchical in structure, with males and
older individuals occupying a higher status

Gender Differences between Asian male and
Asian female
Males=highly valued
Asian families want sons b/c males are important
and they carry on the family name (lineage).
Characteristics of the Traditional Asian Family
 Females=valued less than males, less important role
in family
 The role of the female is to be passive and to adhere
to husband's family, be subservient to the male,
perform domestic chores, and bear children.
 The role of the male is to provide for the family.
Primary duty is to be a good son; obligations to be a
good husband and father come second to duty as son.
As to a line of decent, the family may be Matrilineal,
patrilineal, or Bilineal.
PATRILLINEALwhen the decent is recognized through the fathers line.

MATRILINEALwhen decent is recognized through the
mothers line.

BILINEAL-

when decent is recognized through both fathers
and mothers line.
According to the place of residence, the family maybe classified as:

Patrilocalwhen the newly married couple lives
with the parents of the husband.

Matrilocalwhen the newly married couple lives with the
parents of the wife; or
Neolocalwhen the newly married pair maintains a
separate household and live by themselves.
With reference to authority or who is
considered head, the family may be
classified as:

1. Patriarchal-

when

the father is
considered the head and plays a
dominant role.
2. Matriarchalwhen the mother or female is the
head or makes the major
decisions;and
3.Equalitarianwhen both mother and father share in making
decisions and are equal in authority.
