There is a battle raging for the global future of telecommunications and the Internet. Taking place in networks, board rooms and legislatures, the battle will determine how we all communicate and what opportunities will exist. Will telecom support innovation? Will it be accessible to all? Will it give us the level of security and privacy we need to have the open, trusted Internet? Or will it be restricted and limited by corporate or government gatekeepers?
The rise of voice-over-IP has fundamentally disrupted the massive global telecommunications industry, infrastructure and policies. Open source software such as Asterisk has been a huge driver of that disruption and innovation.. but now what? What role do platforms such as Asterisk play in this space? I made a project about an emerging field that focuses on modifying extremely small, usually not visible with naked eye, materials and creating new things with desired properties. The aim of my project is to foster people understanding about the subject that is believed to have a huge influence on us in a future. - #3: Bo Yang created the concept of Douban while working in a Starbucks in Beijing. Dr. Yang had majored in Physics in Tsinghua University before he attended University of California at San Diego as a PhD student. Worked as a research scientist at IBM. Later, he returned to China, becoming the CTO of a software company founded by one of his friends. In 2005, Dr. Yang started to create a web 2.0 site for travelling, named Luzong (多忱), initially a one man project at a Starbucks in Beijing. In a couple of months, however, the site was transformed to what is now known as Douban.com
