Lets start at the beginning 
 Starting out as an online student brings with it some of the excitement 
and lots of the same trepidation of being a fresher again 
 Helping students acclimatise online takes as much, if not more, 
thought and careful planning as needed for a campus course. 
 What do I need to do to get started? 
 Where do I go to find everything? 
 How do I make progress quickly? 
 Will I fit in?!

The 3 Ns of Socialisation 
Networking - getting to know your colleagues and 
tutors. 
Netiquette - understanding, and committing to, 
behavioural and academic standards of online study. 
Navigation - discovering all the features, functionality 
and study structures within your virtual learning environment 
(VLE).

Step 1 - Networking 
The processes by which new students can 
introduce themselves, personally, professionally 
and as participants in a vibrant learning 
community.

Networking  establish personal 
presence and connections 
Tutors 
 Be easy to contact and 
connect with. 
 Provide Warm and Clear 
feedback, often. 
 Encourage participation with 
warm up exercises like: 
Share your Top 5 xxx; 
World Map Postcards for 
global connections & 
introductions. 
 Make offline contact with no-shows, 
or reluctant 
participants. Encourage and 
cajole them to get started. 
Students 
 Go online as soon as you can, 
have a look around. 
 Create your profile early to 
introduce yourself and your 
goals.

by the tutor to avoid bottlenecks 
down the line. 
 Actively seek opportunities to 
make contact with other 
students and tutors. Try out 
inmail, comment on discussion 
boards. 
 Be curious and be friendly!

forums, and in all synchronous 
activities. 
 Reference carefully all other 
previous sources of knowledge, 
research, information or ideas. 
 Being genuinely curious is a 
gift, use it to draw out learning 
from tutors and fellow students.

Explore the full potential of your learning 
platform from the start.

Navigation  encourage early 
exploration of the VLE platform

 Design introductory 
activities that require 
students to explore and 
share using a range of 
different VLE features and 
formats. 
 Include synchronous and 
asynchronous tasks. 
 Showcase, text, voice and 
video based tools. 
 Link in and out to other 
formats and platforms. 
Students 
 Take a virtual tour as early as 
you can. 
 Try posting, saving and 
publishing something within the 
first week. 
 Test your tech  before the 
course starts! Browsers and 
bandwidth can be your biggest 
friends or foes!

tutor or learning support advisor 
is never far away.

  • 2. + Lets start at the beginning Starting out as an online student brings with it some of the excitement and lots of the same trepidation of being a fresher again Helping students acclimatise online takes as much, if not more, thought and careful planning as needed for a campus course. What do I need to do to get started? Where do I go to find everything? How do I make progress quickly? Will I fit in?!
  • 3. + The 3 Ns of Socialisation Networking - getting to know your colleagues and tutors. Netiquette - understanding, and committing to, behavioural and academic standards of online study. Navigation - discovering all the features, functionality and study structures within your virtual learning environment (VLE).
  • 4. + Step 1 - Networking The processes by which new students can introduce themselves, personally, professionally and as participants in a vibrant learning community.
  • 5. + Networking establish personal presence and connections Tutors Be easy to contact and connect with. Provide Warm and Clear feedback, often. Encourage participation with warm up exercises like: Share your Top 5 xxx; World Map Postcards for global connections & introductions. Make offline contact with no-shows, or reluctant participants. Encourage and cajole them to get started. Students Go online as soon as you can, have a look around. Create your profile early to introduce yourself and your goals. Make an early start on tasks set by the tutor to avoid bottlenecks down the line. Actively seek opportunities to make contact with other students and tutors. Try out inmail, comment on discussion boards. Be curious and be friendly!
  • 6. + Step 2 - Netiquette Establishing the practices and principles that enable an online learning community to thrive.
  • 7. + Netiquette embed great practices for online sharing Tutors Model the online behaviours you wish students to adopt. Praise and give constructive comments in public forums. Use private (1:1) channels for addressing individual issues. Emphasise ground-rules of academic endeavour and the pitfalls of plagiarism. Students Contribute, encourage others and comment constructively. Be mindful to acknowledge others ideas in discussion forums, and in all synchronous activities. Reference carefully all other previous sources of knowledge, research, information or ideas. Being genuinely curious is a gift, use it to draw out learning from tutors and fellow students.
  • 8. + Step 3 - Navigation Explore the full potential of your learning platform from the start.
  • 9. + Navigation encourage early exploration of the VLE platform Tutors Design introductory activities that require students to explore and share using a range of different VLE features and formats. Include synchronous and asynchronous tasks. Showcase, text, voice and video based tools. Link in and out to other formats and platforms. Students Take a virtual tour as early as you can. Try posting, saving and publishing something within the first week. Test your tech before the course starts! Browsers and bandwidth can be your biggest friends or foes! If in doubt Shout! (for help), a tutor or learning support advisor is never far away.
