Softball began in the late 1800s when George Hancock invented "indoor baseball" in Chicago in 1887. It later spread outdoors and was played by the first women's team in 1895. The name "softball" came into use in the 1920s. The game continued spreading internationally through American servicemen in World War 2 and the formation of the International Softball Federation in 1965. Softball is played on a diamond-shaped field with 60-foot bases by two teams of nine players who alternate batting and fielding. The objective is for the batting team to score runs by hitting the ball and running around the bases, while the fielding team aims for three outs to end the inning. Games last seven innings unless tied,

F. There are four bases (first base, second
base, third base and home plate) on the
field of play.
23. G.The lines between the bases are generally 45 to
60ft (approximately 12 to 18m) apart and when joined
they form a diamond.
H. Inside the diamond is the infield which contains the
pitchers plate from which the pitcher throws the ball underarm;
outside the baselines is the outfield.
24. I. Any ball going outside the first or third base line is a
foul ball (runners are not allowed to advance and the
batter gets another try unless the ball was caught in the
air, in which case they are out).
